Places to live in Glasgow- don’t drive

Hi all,

I’m looking for ideas for areas to live in Glasgow.

Our top budget for a 3 bedroom house/ flat is £140 000. A garden is not in our “must haves”.

We would like to live somewhere which has amenities ( shops, parks, cafes etc) that we could reach on foot, and has public transport links to the City Center.

We are not keen on sprawling housing estates ( so East Kilbride is out) and would like somewhere with a community feel.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Think I would avoid cambuslang as I've worked there a few times and every time I get the bus there it seems to be filled with weirdos. I mentioned it once to someone who said there was a prison that way, so maybe that's why. But I never really encountered it travelling to Rutherglen (or even castlemilk which gets a bad rep), but every single time I go to cambuslang there is a nutter or two on the bus. I remember one time, someone shut a window and this guy got right up in his face screaming 'don't you shut that window, these are MY windows!!!' and it really looked like a barny was about to break out on the bus xD

@TeaForTheWin there isn't a prison near cambuslang but yes, the Main Street is dire and attracts weirdos. Good trains into town etc, you'll maybe get a house in your budget but little in the way of social amenities, it's all fast food and pubs with angry men outside!

I'ld look at Burnside or Rutherglen if you're looking in the neck of the woods.

I'd look at knights wood/scotstoun/yoker area. Theres a few train stations like garscadden and scotstounhill with trains every 15 mins and loads of buses going into the west end and town along dumbarton road. You would get a 3 bedroom 4 in a block for under budget.

I'll third what everyone says about Cambuslang. It's all soulless sprawling estates with no amenities. Yes it has a Main Street but no good shops. It is well served by trains and busses though, which is the only bonus I can see, and it has a nice park.
