Moving up in 2020

The plan is to put the house on the market just before Xmas hoping for a move early 2020. Partners job will hopefully take us there but if not we're doing it anyway.
We want somewhere with scenery, possibly closeish to the coast, possibly closeish to an airport so we can get back down to the midlands to see family.
East or West? (Have read on here about the midges???)

Please if you can, give me some help...January will be rocking around before you know it.

Generally west coast is milder and wetter than the east.

Consider what schooling you're after. Edinburgh has loads of private schools. Glasgow schools more likely to be segregated down faith lines.

There have been a few threads recently on Scotsnet so you might like to look there.

Like anywhere have a look at the rail networks to work out where you want to base yourself.

Edinburgh is possibly better for UK flights.

But usually you can gauge the area by the house prices.

Getting back to the Midlands is a bitch from Edinburgh. Trains take ages and involve multiple changes and flights are scary expensive. Haven't looked into it in a lot of detail recently but do your research - I was looking at flying down to brum with work and flights were around £300. Send nuts when you can get to Stansted a tenner.

In terms of places, you might want to sort work first so you don't end up being an east/west or West/East commuter. Then look at your budget and then look for catchment areas for schools.

His job will involve covering all of Scotland so we can choose. No children so no preference for schools,

Where's best weather wise? X

Fife, the Moray coast or East Lothian are probably the sunniest. Inverness Airport isn't the largest, which is closest to the Moray coast, so you may want to go for either of the other two for easy access to Edinburgh Airport.

EightWellies · 03/05/2019 06:08

Just realised that the airport thing is to get to the Midlands. I wouldn't bother with flying, much easier to drive.

couldyouever · 03/05/2019 10:34

Really??? Driving? Thought a flight would be about half an hour or so, driving I've heard would be around 7 hrs.
I think we are leaning towards to east coast.
What's your best summers day like?
What's your worst winters day like?

Thank you for helping me....

From say Dunbar or Aberdour it looks like it's less than 5 hours, by the time you pfaff around at both airports you may as well have driven, plus you still have your car to get around.

Admittedly, I wouldn't be as keen to drive from Inverness for the weekend. I see you can fly from Inverness to Birmingham, so you could think about Nairn or the Black Isle.

I'm not sure how to answer your weather question tbh. I think the East would be drier and sunnier than the Midlands, but it would be colder. Lighter in summer, darker in winter.

lazymare · 04/05/2019 06:53

I live in Aberdour. We are around 25 minutes from the airport when the traffic is good. 35 to Waverley on the train.

lazymare · 04/05/2019 06:54

If I could choose though I would move to NE Fife.

What's your best summers day like? What's your worst winters day like?

It can be different here with a mile tbh. We are on the coast so in the summer it can be foggy here and sunny within 5 minutes drive. Opposite goes with snow - can be ankle deep a mile inland and we get nothing.

Follow places you fancy on the met office app.

Fucktifikeepmyrealname · 04/05/2019 09:09

Further north you go, the shorter the days in the winter and the longer the days in the summer. Think it makes about an hour a day for sunset in Dec v London of you're up in Moray. On the other hand endless summer evenings are pretty sweet.

If you're going to want to go to the Midlands for weekends you need to factor in traffic if you're driving. Fridays are a bloody nightmare. It takes about three/3.5 hours to drive from Elgin to Edinburgh (after work so not rush hour). There's very little dual carriageway North of Perth and average speed cameras up the a9. You could fly from either Aberdeen or Inverness.

If your dp is covering all of Scotland you might want to consider where the bulk of his work will be - driving around Scotland takes longer than it should so you might want to locate near most of his work. There's beautiful coast everywhere.
