Query re Getting Married in Glasgow

SavingSpaces2019 · 24/04/2019 20:41

If i were to get married in Scotland/Glasgow, would i HAVE to provide my birth certificate as well as passport for I.D/docs?

I rang the registry office and they said 'yes' but some people i've spoken to said they only provided their passport.

I was born abroad but have lived in the UK since i was 18 months old and have a British passport.
I'm NC with parents who are abusive and controlling - which is also why they refused to ever give me my birth certificate.
There are no other copies of my birth certificate in the UK and they refuse to tell me exactly where my birth is registered abroad.

I went to the consulate here in Glasgow to get advice and they were useless, "get on with your parents" being the best advice they could offer (very typical of the misogynistic and patriarchal culture of my community and birth country).

How did you get a British passport without a birth certificate?

HouseOfGoldandBones · 24/04/2019 20:59

I needed my Birth Certificate. Sorry OP

SavingSpaces2019 · 24/04/2019 21:16

My parents have my birth certificate and they applied for my first passport when i was still a minor.

As an adult i can renew my passport.

I'm just so pissed off that they can still exert control over my life like this.

I got married in East Dunbartonshire and as dar as I can remember, dh and I only presented our passports. I can remember giving them lots of other details like the dates of birth of our parents and the dates of their marriages and the dates of birth if our witnesses.

Just as well as I've lost mislaid my birth certificate (I know it's somewhere in the house Blush) and it would be extremely difficult for me to get another one as I was born in South Africa Shock Dh may have had his birth certificate (as a Glaswegian born and bred, it's easy enough for him to get another copy).

Looking at the link on the Scot.gov web site, it says you need your birth certificate or to state a reason why you don't have it - so in your case, just explain why you don't have it (NC with abusive, controlling parents Sad)

Maybe I just got an nice registrar Wink (It was also over 20 years ago so maybe it was before I lost it Blush)

My other thought was that I know my passport says where I was born in SA - as that was on my birth certificate. Is that also on your passport as it might help you to narrow down where to contact to get a copy from your birth certificate?

Thanks guys.
prettybird that lessens my anxiety somewhat....though i think i may need to employ devious methods to get my parents date of births as i don't have that info either - i was never 'allowed' to have access to that kind of family info.

I've actually checked it all online but my country of birth has changed its system to a Smart/ID card system, so now you need your parents ID card numbers to get the translated certified copy.
I can't even renounce my citizenship for that country without their details Angry

cdtaylornats
Thankyou.
Hopefully they will be more understanding than the person at the Registrars office here i spoke to.

You can get a copy of your birth certificate without difficulty.

PCohle · 25/04/2019 01:05

Yes, you can order a replacement copy of your birth certificate online very easily, which might help avoid some stress.

Just make sure you order it from the .gov site, there are a lot of rip off ones that charge more around.

prettybird · 25/04/2019 07:45

Savingspence says in her OP she wasn't born in the UK - hence the problem Confused

englishdictionary · 25/04/2019 10:05

Apologies OP I totally missed that.

Is there any point contacting your MP/MSP to see if they can help with your birth country? If your not getting anywhere it can’t hurt to see if someone else can help?

kaytee87 · 03/05/2019 09:21

I married in east Dunbartonshire too, we needed our birth certificates.

kaytee87 · 03/05/2019 09:22

Also I'm sorry, your parents sound horrible. I hope you manage to sort it out.
