Commutable - nice place to live?

Hi all

Happy Easter!

Wonder if anyone can advise. I'm looking at jobs in the North of Scotland and also considering Dundee.

My OH lived in Dundee for a while a very long time ago and doesn't want to live there but has said ok to live in a nice place not too far away and commute to Dundee. I'm very unfamiliar with the area but have looked on maps and rightmove (but am conscious it's not the same as those in the know)

Can anyone advise nice areas to live in the surrounds that are commutable (by car or public transport) to Dundee?

Many thanks.

Broughty Ferry is lovely. Dundee has changed a lot and is very much on the up.

Littleelffriend · 21/04/2019 07:02

Depending on your industry there aren’t lots of employment opportunities in Dundee, but as pp said it’s on the up.

FairfaxAikman · 21/04/2019 07:05

As PP said, Dundee has vastly improved in the last few years - hence attracting the v&a etc.

Outside it depends if you want more of a town or a village.
Personally I like villages so I'd be looking at the ones on the "landward" side of St Andrews (between there and Cupar) but would personally avoid Wormit and Tayport (just don't like them). There's also nice places in the Carse of Gowrie (area between Dundee and Perth) or Perth itself.
Cupar is ok but I'd avoid Coupar Angus (chicken factory!) and I personally detest Angus, particularly Forfar and Brechin.

(I'm a Fifer who's worked in Angus and Dundee and now work in Perth)

Dundee has just been declared the best place to live in Scotland! It has changed a lot in recent years. Don't rule it out.

wellhelloyou · 21/04/2019 09:08

Thanks all! I didn't mean to give the impression we don't like Dundee, more that my OH lived there for a while and would just like to live somewhere smaller. A village or town - someone above hit the nail there. We're excited to be visiting the V&A when we move back.

Thanks for the information everyone.

@ FairfaxAikman - may I ask why you don't like Angus, Forfar and Brechin? I've heard Cupar is really lovely too.

Thanks @EightWellies I'll look up Broughty Ferry

@ Littleelffriend thanks for the heads up. I'm able to do any level of administration and a few HR roles so hopefully something will open up. Have seen a few roles on s1jobs today that I'll check out.

Thanks @UCOinanOCG just looking to live somewhere smaller tis all.

I live in a little village just outside of forfar and it's lovely. 5 mins in to forfar, there's nothing wrong with it. Loads of places to eat, still shop shops about unlike montrose which is only charity shops and hairdressers.
Brechin is a definite no, no. Nothing there.

Just re-posting as the bold didn't work.

And i agree broughty ferry is lovely. Although house prices could be higher there

Whisky2014 · 21/04/2019 09:12

St Andrews too

Whisky2014 · 21/04/2019 09:17

I've sent you a pm. I think it went through twice, sorry about that!

wellhelloyou · 21/04/2019 09:22

Thanks @Whisky2014 I'll look at PM. Thanks for your advice.

Cupar is okay and I am sure you will get a good house for your money but there isn't much there. The town centre is a bit lacking. I live in St Andrews. It is lovely with plenty going on and great shops but expensive to buy.

wellhelloyou · 21/04/2019 09:37

Thanks @UCOinanOCG I like St Andrews (only visited once) but it would be way out of our price range I'm thinking. I'll look into all areas tho mentioned.

And actually Perth is really nice. I went to visit a friend there recently and wondered why i dont go more often. Lots to see and do and good architecture etc. Not a long commute to dundee.

FairfaxAikman · 21/04/2019 10:23

@wellhelloyou Brechin is absolutely dead. Forfar I suppose is ok but the centre just feels a bit claustrophobic to me. I worked there for a while and an uncle lived there. Neither of us are fans tbh. Maybe it's just us and our preferences.
I'm originally from St Andrews and the streets are just so much wider.
Like you it's out of my price range, which is why I suggested Cupar.

wellhelloyou · 21/04/2019 10:28

Thanks @FairfaxAikman

Another vote for Cupar. Good range of shops (Lidl, Aldi, Tesco, Co-op) butchers, bakers, lots of coffee shops. There is a slightly dated sports centre but it has a swimming pool. Primary and secondary schooling in the town. Bell-Baxter is a big high school. It's a good centre for travelling to St Andrews and Dundee and only about an hour on the train to Edinburgh. The railway is a big plus for teens as they become more independent. Some nice houses and not nearly as expensive as St Andrews.

Groovee · 21/04/2019 18:23

My friend moved to Monifeith, she loves it there.

My Dd lives in Dundee. She really likes it and it wasn't where she wanted to move to but it was for uni.

IckleWicklePumperNickle · 21/04/2019 18:32

Angus is brilliant.

Forfar and Kirriemuir is easy commutable to Dundee. There is also Newtyle. If I had the money I would stay up in the Glens on a large estate Grin

I don't mind travelling to bigger places to do stuff.

Have a look at www.tspc.co.uk

wellhelloyou · 21/04/2019 23:26

Thanks all. Loads to research now. You’ve all been brilliantly helpful, cheers!

Nothing wrong with Montrose, Arbroath however just no!

ImNotNigel · 12/05/2019 15:43

How do you plan to commune to Dundee ? Parking in the city centre is expensive and limited, many commuters park 15 mins away from work and walk in.

Just something to factor in.

If you dont know the area you should take a long weekend off work and go and drive around.
