Village/small town within commuting distance from Glasgow

Hi all,

We are moving to Scotland in the next few months. Due to my husbands work, we need to be no further than 1 hour away from Glasgow. Ideally, we would like a village/small town within easy commuting distance.

Our wish list is: Good schools, village/small town feel, easy commute to Glasgow, outdoor space (i.e. not a new build where garden space is limited), relatively large house as we need two study's (due to working at home) and at least four bedrooms.

We have considered Crieff (a little bit far from Glasgow), Dunblane (mostly new builds with little outdoor space), Bridge of Allan (few houses come up). Out budget is up to 500k.

I am Scottish and lived in a number of different places within Scotland, but I do not know the Glasgow area well. Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Milngavie?

JassyRadlett · 06/04/2019 21:14

I’ve got friends in Bearsden who really love it.

Scotlandbound · 06/04/2019 21:17

Thanks for your reply.

We have a healthy budget, but we wouldn't get the size of house we require there (two study's is essential since I will work 100% from home and my husband 50% of the time)

My response was in reply to Milngavie, but I have a feeling that Bearsden would be the same

Eaglesham or strathaven

stuckasachild · 06/04/2019 21:23

East Ayrshire has easy commuting. Check out Fenwick or Kilmaurs (later on train line and has several traditional stone built houses). Hope you find what you are looking for Smile

Does anyone know the villages north of Bearsden/milngavie? Drymen? Strathblane? Killearn?

Bothwell?

Lucked · 06/04/2019 21:28

Strathaven, Eaglesham, Balfron,Kilearn.

sweetkitty · 06/04/2019 21:29

Newton Mearns/Eaglesham/East Kilbride down into East Ayrshire

Kilmacolm, Bridge of Weir and Houston are nice. Have friends in Kilmacolm and love visiting

sunkengalleon · 06/04/2019 21:35

I live in killearn and love it. Previously lived in Glasgow and still work there, commute 30-40 mins. No trains, but buses fairly regular. Really friendly place and school is good. All feeders into Balfron High School are nice to live in. Really pretty place, good community feel.

Shmoople · 06/04/2019 21:35

Lots of people with similar requirements seem to head to Lenzie. Although maybe that's a bit more suburban feeling than small town feeling.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/04/2019 21:43

How about this OP? A village on the outskirts of Stirling so within your hour either driving or by train.

$ beds and could use the dressing room as one study and plenty of leftover budget and land to add another somewhere - maybe an office building in the garden?

I also love this one in Bridge of Allan, it's a period upper maisonette with private garden with 5 beds and a study and well under budget.

Killearn and Strathblane are lovely. Also Torrance.

We looked at this place recently www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-77105915.html
It's fab, enormous inside and would meet your requirements but might be a bit out of budget, though it's been on the market a while so they might take less. Only reason we didn't buy it is DH has to be within 20 mins of his work in Glasgow and the private road makes it just over that.

There are quite a few similar properties on the market around that area. I find doing draw a search on rightmove more helpful than randomly clicking on areas

TooMinty · 06/04/2019 22:10

I live in Stirling and Glasgow is less than an hour's commute, you'd get a decent house for that budget here.

Glitterkitten24 · 06/04/2019 22:13

Bishopbriggs, Torrance, Milton of Campsie?

onetwofive · 06/04/2019 22:13

Helensburgh/Rhu/the Rosneath peninsular?

Cherylshaw · 06/04/2019 22:16

I grew up in fintry (g63) it's about 25 min commute to Glasgow.
Really rural, large houses, great school masses of outdoor space (castle, hills, waterfalls, fields, ponds etc) it honestly is an amazing place with great community feel

thefirstmrsrochester · 06/04/2019 22:19

Chryston, Stepps, Gartcosh?

Scotlandbound · 06/04/2019 22:19

Wow, so many responses. Thanks everyone.

We need to do some researching!

Would you consider a 'fixer upper'?

Seriously under budget, ample space, moments from train station and school. Handy for town and beach. 55min to Glasgow.

Fintry is lovely I agree. So friendly, great community and wonderful scenery.

Niffler25 · 06/04/2019 22:26

Strathblane is nice, as are the surrounding areas. Houston/Bridge of Weir and the surrounding villages are lovely but I'm not suspicious the schools are only really good in Houston (secondary anyway). Kilmacolm is really nice but I don't think there is actually a state school there, only private. Bishopbriggs is apparently quite a good area and I know they have good schools.

I haven't actually lived in any of these areas, just worked in them and know many people who do live there. I may be talking nonsense Blush.
