Warning Sirens in the 1970s

I'm on a FB page for the area I grew up and people are reminiscing about the regular testing (and malicious setting off) of warning sirens. I remember these from my childhood, they were like the air raid sirens of the 2nd world war but were intended as "the 4 minute warning" alarm of a nuclear attack during the cold war.

It was always quite chilling when you heard one during a test, even more so when some delinquent had broken in and set it off unexpectedly!

Did anyone else have these where they were?

@teyem merseyside. The sound travels fairly fair though down the mersey.

Like Kinsey, I grew up next to an RAF base in the 70s and 80s and I remember the sirens going off. Nobody reacted in the slightest, it was just a thing that happened. I do remember though (like prettybird) that the perceived wisdom was to run towards the base rather than away from it if a nuclear bomb was dropped, but I never worked out if it was an "eye of the storm" thing or whether it was just to get the frying and melting over with a bit quicker 🤔

I remember this, grew up in Cupar , was aware of the sirens and dm had even done a course to prepare for the aftermath of a nuclear war Shock ...protect and survive
