School advice

Looking for some advice or experiences (good and bad) on Primary and secondary schools in Scotland that have provision for ASD or communication difficulties?
Thinking about moving but not sure where too so just wondered what other good schools are out there.
Thanks

Well it's a big place!

Unfortunately accessing specialist provision is very difficult due to the presumption of mainstreaming. The experiences of children at each mainstream school will be different and down to the ethos of the school and management.

You will be guaranteed a place at your mainstream catchment school.

I know of two schools in my area which have specialist language and communication units, no idea how "good" they are though.

You're going to have to be more specific in location to get any concrete advice.

I'm very fortunate that I can live anywhere in Scotland due to my job. Currently in Lanarkshire. Was hoping that maybe someone would see the post and have knowledge of units/bases that I could consider.

renton speech and language unit seems to get a good reputation but i don't know it directly (neighbouring local authority). not a great area generally but i think you can go there living anywhere in west dunbartonshire.

Have you looked at the Hamilton Grammar unit. Kids with ASD in my DCs primary tended to transfer there for secondary. No knowledge of the unit other than local paper showing successes at exam time.

It’s not so much that you need to consider schools. You need to consider the likelihood of your child getting a place in a special school.

It is very difficult in many councils to get a place in a special school. Mainstream schools are expected to cope.

How old is your child? Do they have an official diagnosis? Are you being supported by SALT or educational pyschology?

It might be worth looking for mainstream schools that have a base for severe and complex needs, as there will be plenty expertise on ASD / communication there even if your child wouldn't need to access the base full-time and would be placed into a classroom.

Have a look at daldorch house school. I know of a couple of kids who go there, and it seems to be a good school.
