I thought I'd start our own thread seeing as there's threads for S5/6, exams, uni etc.

V nervous about DD starting S1. High school's a whole other ball game isn't it? I remember being badly bullied and feeling overwhelmed in the first few weeks.

Does anyone know what books they tend to read in English in S1 nowadays, and what they study in History in S1 - my two favourite subjects when I was at schools so I'm curious.

In my DD's high school, they will be choosing subjects midway through S1 which seems awfy early (it was S2 when I was at school).

I wonder what the most popular subjects are...there seems to be some really cool options nowadays although I would hope DD will choose subjects that she is likely to actually use/need in her future career and not because all her friends are doing it.

Anyone else have a DC starting high school?

How did the first day go @strangerthongs my dd doesn't have hers until closer to the end of the month but has been on lots of visits there for a myriad of things.

strangerthongs · 05/06/2019 20:28

hassle this morning as her BFF didn't turn up to walk to school together so DD all distressed about walking herself. Some friend eh? But I was off and gave her a lift.

She liked science today and says she made some new friends.

Also the school say they are moving subject choice back to S2 and not in S1 anymore which is a relief. was a stupid idea anyway as what S1 knows what they want to do at that stage?

2nd taster day is tomorrow and I think they have art, drama and PE

Oh that's crappy of her friend 🙁 glad it sounds like she had a good day though. Hope tomorrow (today) goes just as well.

strangerthongs · 21/06/2019 11:29

well the leavers dance was yesterday and it was all going so well until the end when a fist fight broke out amongst the girls. DD tried to help and got pushed and kicked. Great teachers we have so I'm pretty angry this morning.

She looked lovely and we got her hair and make up all done. It was interesting to see the number of girls who preferred to wear jeans and t shirts though!

Next week is the church service. I really do not want to go but there might be awards handed out and she'd kill me if I wasn't there. Maybe I could pretend I was at the back...

DS1 has his leavers dance last night too. No fisticuffs! Most of the girls looked very glam. DS1 coped really well, he has anxiety and ADHD so this is a pretty tough time for him.

strangerthongs · 28/06/2019 17:20

and that was the last day of primary school.

lots of tears (from DD) today.

Now the next step begins!

how did everyone else's DC get on today?

OP posts:
Tunnockswafer · 28/06/2019 18:16

There were kids in tears but not mine as he’s glad to move on!

strangerthongs · 19/07/2019 19:21

how is everyone doing over the hols? Uniforms etc all sorted?

We are doing okay here - just shoes to get, which I will probably get last min as she's still growing. She wants skechers but they aren't waterproof. Anyone know of any similar types, comfortable for walking to and from school, stylish and obviously black?

The school haven't said where they've to go on the first day, whether its straight to registration or go to the assembly hall. So DD and her friends are stressing a bit. Really blooming stupid tbh.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/07/2019 22:47

If it's anything like DSs school, they'll have staff out directing them to where they need to be - probably the assembly hall on the first morning.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/07/2019 22:54

My DSs always liked Kickers for school as they were comfy and hardwearing - not the cheapest, but her feet should be more or less grown?

Where I teach, most places I've taught and DDS' school first day of S1 starts with an assembly so that timetables etc can be distributed and important info passed on. The S1 pupils are usually shepherded in by the team involved with the year group and S6 primed and in hand to support too. They might then proceed to their registration classroom with registration teacher so they know where to go the next morning.

Schools are really aware of nerve wrecking an experience this is for S1s and their parents so put a great deal of planning and preparation into the early days. Good luck to you both.

strangerthongs · 20/07/2019 14:25

yeah I guessed it would be assembly hall, that's good then, but there will be lots of confused kids turning up who weren't told.

DD has broken her arm so is a bit worried the cast wont be off by starting school and that she will get into trouble if she can't write. She's not as upset about getting out of PE though lol

OP posts:
Lidlfix · 20/07/2019 16:02

Let the school know about wrist, as even if the cast is off her hand might be weaker than normal. They should be able to arrange temporary use of ICT for her. Also if she is still in plaster special evacuation arrangements need to be in place - a fire drill usually is scheduled for early days so the new S1s know the procedures.

Offices are open all summer and SMT very much present from results day (6th August) onward.

prettybird · 20/07/2019 20:51

When ds broke his collarbone (at rugby training at school) in S1, they arranged for him to be let out (with a friend) a wee bit before each bell so that he wouldn't be jostled - and his friend could open the doors for him.

FlippingBottleFlippers · 21/07/2019 06:56

My DD had these for S1 and S2, fashionable and substantial and lasted the whole year. She has a 5 minute walk to the bus stop but needs decent coverage as the bus is often late and no shelter.

DDs school shoes (boots) just arrived. She needs quite supportive footwear as she's dyspraxic and is in physio just now. Got them on the imperfects area of Schuh so thankfully not the £130 they originally cost.

Uniform ordered just need to find the skirts/tights combo she's decided to wear. She struggles with tights but thinks she'll be fine.

I'm a little nervous about it all coming round so quickly, I'm hoping the school will be as supportive as her primary was. The whole friendship groups thing is worrying as she doesn't make friends easily due to social/communication skills (asd) and is often seen as a wee bit weird (she is, I love that she is her own person and unique).

She's excited though so that's the main thing.

strangerthongs · 29/07/2019 15:13

awww, that's sweet. We are literally leaving shoes til the last minute. I can see that DD has taken another stretch. She literally looks about 16 (which scares me!)

It looks like DD might get her cast off in time or a smaller/lighter cast as a replacement. She got another x ray and its not as bad as we thought so should heal quickly apparently. Bloody jelly legs.

I'm still nervous. I want to hover about outside and peek in the windows!

One of DD's friends is in a registration class with kids who apparently bully her and her mum requested a move and was refused :(

DD seems okay with who is in her registration class. One girl is one to watch but DD likes the others.

dontfluffthefluffer · 30/07/2019 00:26

I hope she can get a lighter cast on and thank goodness it's not as bad as first anticipated.

That's not so good for your dds friend. I hope they manage to keep on top of it and let's hope the summer break has chilled out the bully.

I was going to hold off on shoes but saw these (which are in perfect condition so no idea why they were in imperfects tbh) and figured she could start wearing them in a bit now. She's already a 6/7 so keeping my fingers crossed they don't grow too much more. She's already stealing every pair of shoes I own 🙄.

strangerthongs · 06/08/2019 18:35

help! taking DD shoe shopping tomorrow. She is adamant now that she wants VANS as all her friends are apparently getting them.

I had a look at JD sports website and they don't seem to be waterproof nor very schoolish.

Any other recommendations? She's already kicking off about how they must be VANS.

I looked at kickers and skechers but neither seem waterproof either.

Dr Martens I remember as not being very comfortable (but cool in the 90s!)

OP posts:
Lidlfix · 06/08/2019 18:50

Do Vans fit in with uniform policy? Wouldn't be allowed at my DDs school. Where I teach they would go against policy but in reality nobody would say anything apart from a zealous depute head.

That aside they are not waterproof and (like most flat canvas shoes) provide no arch support and are not comfortable for wearing, especially walking for any distance, for prolonged amounts of time.

strangerthongs · 06/08/2019 20:04

yeah that was my thinking but apparently they do black versions and everyone is wearing them

I miss the DD who didn't GAF what others were wearing.

Here we go eh?

OP posts:
dontfluffthefluffer · 09/08/2019 00:34

I got these for DD from the imperfects section (as £130 was way out of my budget) and they are waterproof and came looking perfect enough.

strangerthongs · 09/08/2019 09:44

very nice. DD ended up getting skechers (not waterproof) and adidas (waterproof apparently but not fully black so we'll hold off until we get a better idea of the uniform policy!)

just over a week to go. DD asked me yesterday if I was taking her to school and waiting with her til the bell went. Awww she's starting to get nervous. She originally wanted to walk with her friends but I think she's getting first day nerves.

dontfluffthefluffer · 09/08/2019 11:15

It's all come along so quickly, I'm not sure where the holidays have gone!

weebarra · 14/08/2019 14:48

I've just had DS1's timetable posted through. Exciting!
Hope everyone who started today is ok!
