Newlands

Hello, my husband and I are considering moving to Newlands. We’ve rented in Shawlands for a year and have loved being in amongst things, so close to shops and cafes and the park. We like the houses and the space in Newlands but is it a bit cut off? Any thoughts on the area very welcome please! Also we have a daughter who will need to start school in the next couple of years- so schools are another consideration. Thank you!

It is a lovely area ,but the school provision would concern me.Are you in a position to go private

I think the secondary catchment school is Hillpark? Personally, I wouldn't send my children there & would move a bit further out - Giffnock has better school provisions & some nice places to eat, shops etc - only a short bus hop away from Shawlands.

Newlands is only a mile down the road from Shawlands, buses run up & down Kilmarnock Rd. In what way do you mean cut off? Newlands is part of the suburbian South Side which has good bus & train connections into town with supermarkets & local shops all walking distance.

Cannot comment on local primary schools query, what I do know is that most families choose houses in line with the usual cohort of East Ren secondary schools.

Confused by your post!

Agree you won't have the cafes etc right on your doorstep, but hardly cut off.
If you can afford to live there, it seems like a lovely area.

Newlands is not cut off. I used to live in Shawlands until I moved for an East Renfrewshire school. I do miss having everything within walking distance. Is some of Newlands in the catchment area for Langside Primary and Shawlands Academy or has the catchment area changed? I knew people who lived in Newlands and those were their catchment schools but was a while ago. My son knows kids who go to Hillpark and they like it but it doesn't have a great reputation.

Thank you very much for all these comments- they’re all really helpful. It sounds, from a leisure/socialising point of you as if people recommend it. I believe Langside and Shawlands are possible primary schools (as well as Tinto and Merrylee?) but I’m not up to speed on the Scottish school system. Can you request out of catchment places? It sounds as if Hillpark might be a bit concerning. Again thanks so much for your responses.

You can make a request, but it's not so much primary school that's the issue - for secondary, the chance of getting in to an East Renfrewshire school on a placing request is becoming increasingly unlikely.

Shawlands Academy is an excellent school - not just academically but also holistically, developing well rounded young people (celebrating sports, musical and artistic achievements as well as academic results). Ds left last year and is now happily ensconced at Aberdeen Uni Smile

Langside and Shawlands are both feeder primaries and seem to be good schools. Iirc, Merrylee goes to Kingspark (or is it Hill Park? Confused - I always get the two confused Blush). Because Merrylee and Tinto are new build primaries, they ended up getting lots of placing requests just because they were "new" schools but personally, I'd prefer Shawlands Academy over Kingspark ( and Hill Park Wink) - but then, I would say that as ds was a placing request to Shawlands (he should've gone to Bellahouston).

I agree with pretty bird about Shawlands.
