Moving primary kids from England to Scotland

Hi! We are looking into moving to Glasgow and I am feeling really nervous about moving my 3 children from their current Primary school that is tiny (130 kids) to a school more than double the size! They are turning 8 in feb and 7 in may (yr 2 and 3). Also we are within 20 mins of all our family here! Such a big change for them! Has anyone made a move similar?

We did it a long time ago and it was fine, although we weren't near family before we moved.

Be prepared for your February child to be the youngest in the year. The cut off up here is February for children and the youngest are quite often kept back a year.

Good luck!

If you get the choice push for your February born to go into the lower year.

Deferring the February born is what I would do. They are used to being a year apart in age and at school from their sibling. If you don't defer not only would your February born be the youngest in their year but they would also be a year ahead of where they would be relative to the English system and 2 years ahead of their sibling. My older 2 are 18 months apart in age but only a year in schooling. I have friends with DC with the same gap but 2 years apart, due to birthday dates. It does change the dynamic between siblings.

It is far more normal than not to defer February born. I would be surprised if it were a problem.

What about Ayrshire where the schools are smaller but you’re still within reach of Glasgow?

In the main towns, on the train routes etc for Glasgow the schools in Ayrshire are roughly the same size as Glasgow. Also the bigger schools tend to be better in Ayrshire and Glasgow. Other issue with Ayrshire is if you want to travel to England to visit relatives then whether by car, train or aeroplane you have to come up to Glasgow first.
