Dream house or schools, Rutherglen- East Ren

So background, I grew up in Giffnock went to OLM then St.Ninians and was really happy and feel that easy REN schools really would provide the best education for my daughter. My husband grew up in Rutherglen and family support is there ect. However all schools in the area seem to be really poor. We are looking to move and have found our dream home - in Rutherglen period property large garden ect. We would never be able to afford the same type of house in east ren, literally can’t get a 3 bed for under 300K and even then most need loads of work. So question is what would you do dream house or schools? What are Rutherglen schools like. Private really not an option as wouldn’t be able to afford for 2 children and want another baby someday.

I don’t know Rutherglen school personally but I would always go for schools.

You can always move to a “dream house” later.

AmeliaMae · 07/12/2018 12:33

It sounds like Rutherglen would be a good option for you. A dream home and family support being close by.

TheEndofIt · 07/12/2018 13:13

To be honest, it's just bricks & mortar.

I would rather give my DC more opportunities through a better education.

Rutherglen to East Ren isn't too far for family to travel.

howabout · 07/12/2018 17:29

For primary, at least, especially if your DH is local and you have family I would go with Rutherglen. If worst came to worst could you stretch to private for S3 upwards? That was our strategy in a similar location dilemma. Actually didn't use it as DC happy with State and getting great results.

chapthedoor · 07/12/2018 21:11

Schools in Rutherglen are not poor so I don't know why you think that. I have friends in the area (Burnside- ia lovely area with beautiful houses and a nice Main Street and train station) and their DC are doing very well at school with no problems. They go to Burnside Primary and Stonelaw High. There is also a private school (Fernhill) if you want to go down that route,

AmyLou14 · 07/12/2018 22:47

We currently live in the catchment for Burnside primary but a move would mean that changes The plan was always burnside primary for a few years then private/ move to east ren. But due to changes at home we are being forced to move sooner. and we have friends that have tried unsuccessfully for the past 3 years for a placing request for burnside primary and always been unsuccessful. Fernhill is nice, I have family there, but for me it’s too small and private school wouldn’t be an option financially. I guess schools do need to come first, a lottery win might just turn up. Smile

I agree with you on Fernhill. If I were going private from Rutherglen I would go the standard Hutchie / St Aloysius route - private schools don't care about catchment areas and are always happy to accept bright pupils in senior school to boost their results - it's a well trodden path and one of the reasons Rutherglen state school results are artificially depressed. Grin Three years at private is £45k a child and you could start saving now rather than spending the money servicing an extra £100k mortgage. If the reasoning is you get the money back from the house but not the private school fees then it is hard to argue that the decision is truly about prioritising education.

On the subject of house prices I strongly suspect that East Ren is a bit overheated atm, although the transfer of Centre 1 and the changes in hospital sites in Glasgow will also be having a similarly depressing effect on Rutherglen and the rest of South Lanarkshire.

No idea why anyone would care about private / "naice" school for primary? Teaching the 3Rs with a supportive home environment is really not hard. If you worry about the class divide then I would worry more about being the "poor" kid in a shoebox house in East Ren, but I get that that may just be me.

My DM went to Gallowflat when it was a secondary modern. My DF went to Hutchie when all Glasgow teachers' DC got private funding. It was a very different social divide then.

AmyLou14 · 08/12/2018 12:46

Totally get what you mean about the poor kid in a shoebox house thing..... I remember the keeping up with the Jones mentality from school so much. If I’m honest it was definitely damaging. Well the offer will be going in on the dream house on Monday Wink

Fingers crossed for you Smile

AmeliaMae · 08/12/2018 13:49

Good luck!

No you won’t get your dream house in East Ren with 3 beds for under 300k. But it’s NOT true to say that there’s nothing under 300k that doesn’t need a lot of work.

Some of these below are also in the catchment for OLM / st ninians .

3 and 4 bed houses in catchment of good east Renfrewshire schools under £300k . Some as low as £185k

We went for the large house in Rutherglen and regretted it. Ended up moving to east Ren part way through primary which was upsetting and disruptive for the kids.

trixymalixy · 19/12/2018 23:54

Also have 4 friends who moved their kids from burnside primary to east Ren schools.

scotmum1977 · 26/12/2018 16:44

Get your dream house and send them to fernhill which is an excellent school. East ref is overpriced because of the schools. Fernhill will cost but academically better than the other east ref state schools and it's a lovely small school. Good luck!

Graffitiqueen · 28/12/2018 00:35

Fern hill is in danger of going bust. Wouldn’t be sending my kids there.

scotmum1977 · 29/12/2018 12:11

@Graffitiqueen it was 4 years ago however they have investors now and stable again

What did you end up doing? How have things worked out?
