My daughter in law. Primary school teacher and very aggreived at how teachers are treated both by LA and Scottish Govt. I wish them everyy success in their claim and have said if she strikes I will make up her salary such is my support for the teachers’ actions

Glasgowbound · 27/10/2018 17:42

Thank you senior citizen. It was a great march with close to 30000 at it - have never seen such a show of support actually. We all want the best for children and demoralised teachers aren’t the way to get that.

It was incredible. Hoping to see good coverage in the media- people round about us were estimating far more.

Seniorcitizen1 · 27/10/2018 19:56

Saw on the awful Swinney trying to day most will get between 5-11% - not enough and dont believe him. My daughter-in-law is becoming quite militant over this and will vote to strike. I’m lucky that I have the wealth to support but even if I hadn’t she’ll still be voting to strike. I can support her for weeks if necessary

Glasgowbound · 27/10/2018 20:10

She’s lucky to have you Smile
They are claiming the 11% because if they alter the number of points on the scale some teachers will have a big “jump” in the first year. Then that’s it. Most teachers this will not happen for.

I tell her that all the time!!

PiperPublickOccurrences · 28/10/2018 08:08

Not a teacher. But the parent of a S4 boy rapidly approaching Nat 5s and critical Highers.

When I was at the same stage in the 80s, there was extensive strike action from the EIS and the SSTA. It's history repeating itself.

Hope it's resolved soon.

Seniorcitizen1 · 28/10/2018 08:51

Down to snp to play fair with teachers

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 28/10/2018 15:04

The same process has just happened to the nurses but they can't and won't march or strike to improve it. I wish them well, but I don't fancy their chances of improvement.

margotsdevil · 28/10/2018 15:18

This is true about nurses and I fully support them in wanting a fairer increase. Nurses are however paid for overtime and they don't fund the running of their wards out of their own pockets....

Lidlfix · 28/10/2018 15:20

Piper it won't be decision taken lightly. But the government aren't for listening. I will be horribly aware of the consequences for my DD3 sitting 5 Highers and DD4 sitting 7 Nat 5s of the impact of my placing an X in a box.

That said I don't much enjoy making them wait for new shoes and squeeze another term out a faded fraying jumper. DH is a public sector employee too and years of effective pay cuts have left us a lot worse off than we used to be. I know we're not alone in this.

I work beside teachers, I used to be a nurse and my husband is a senior nurse. I can certainly tell you that the experienced, more senior nurses are not paid for their overtime but are expected to get the job done anyway. DH's wage is running about 20% behind where it should be and he puts in extra hours every week, even during his 6 weeks of annual leave. I imagine many senior nurses do this regularly.

As I said in my previous post, nurses can't strike where the teachers can and that gives you an advantage, but don't go believing that you are the most exploited group.

catsandogs · 28/10/2018 15:39

I wish I'd gone but the dcs had things on. 26 years in this job and I'm scunnered by the negative press, ever increasing workload and slagging off from all quarters.

Reading comments online today make me want to spit/swear/cry/rage.

Currently trying to put my S6 daughter off teaching...I don't know what's going to happen in education but myself and my colleagues are all about broken and I despair for my future grandchildren's education, I really do.

Glasgowbound · 28/10/2018 16:04

Teachers getting a fairer pay raise will not disadvantage nurses. It is not, as often said on here, a race to the bottom. I can see about the not striking, but why couldn’t they march?
To be honest a couple of days of strike action would have far less impact on children than the drain of teachers leaving the profession and the absence of new recruits to take their places.

Okay, so more senior nurses don't get overtime - I didn't appreciate that. But I suspect that the majority do? And again, they aren't funding the running of their ward from their own pocket. As a PP said this isn't a race to the bottom.

Difficult Obviously want teachers, nurses etc to be properly paid But wages in the private sector are very depressed also, but without the job security, pensions etc
Nobody at any kind of senior level in my company only does their set hours

jjemimapuddleduck · 29/10/2018 21:26

My DH and our primary age kids were there. They thought it was amazing, very empowering. Proud of them all!

shakeyourcaboose · 29/10/2018 21:28

Am so proud of all my teacher friends and family who absolutely did amazingly in their yellowness! The pics lve seen of George Square are fantastic!

Lidlfix · 29/10/2018 21:37

User pay is only a small part of why teachers may strike. Have you read the anonymous letter to John Swinney from the primary teacher? It is not an exaggeration.
