Ah managed to work out how to get back on here ...
My idea is to get my oldest a good watch for his birthday in nov and say it’s from both me and his mum ... she died 6 wks ago I thought its be something special in years to come for him
What do you think??

i think that sounds like a lovely idea. you can get watches that have engravings on the back now too would you do something like that or keep it plain? i'm really sorry to hear about your ds's mum.

prettybird · 02/10/2018 21:45

I think that's a lovely idea. How much do you want to spend?

I agree about getting it engraved.

WaxOnFeckOff · 02/10/2018 22:56

We got DS one of these for his 18th as he isn't really flashy and it's not mega expensive so this seemed quite classic and plain but had stylish design and also has a nice link with Scotland too:

We got the charcoal suede but I also thought the black face with the tan strap would be really nice too.

I was going to suggest Paulin Smile - but that's why I asked about budget first Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 02/10/2018 23:05

I think it's a decent price for what you get pb and is for me a middle budget I suppose, would be expensive to some but cheap to others. DS needs a hole made in the strap for a better fit and keep meaning to take him in to the store to see if they'd do that as I don't want to make a botch job.

WaxOnFeckOff · 02/10/2018 23:08

I should really be on commission, two folk I work with have also bought on my recommendation! I honestly don't have any links with them though! One of them is a bit of a watch geek and bought the automatic one and says that they movement they use for the watch is a really good one.

prettybird · 02/10/2018 23:14

I've always thought they look really stylish. Shows the power of advertising on our diddy underground! Grin

BrokenWing · 02/10/2018 23:16

A watch is a lovely choice, make sure you you get one that is repairable by a watch maker rather than an electronic one as you'll want it to last a life time.

Ds(14) proudly wore a kilt for the first time last week for a family wedding and it crossed my mind to get him an engraved sgian dubh and/or formal cufflinks for his 18th. My brothers own their own kilts, but wasnt sure if this would be something ds will do in future.

WaxOnFeckOff · 02/10/2018 23:17

I've never seen an advert! A friend had one and I admired it and then looked them up when we were looking for something for DSs birthday. I had to set aside my Edinburgh sensibilities in order to purchase a weegie product right enough....:o

Mickmusic · 03/10/2018 06:24

Getting better at working found my way back really shocking how useless I’m on tec... thanks everyone for there thoughts ... mechanical so it’s repairable brilliant thought and thous watches look good on that link ta

I have a Citizen eco-drive which I bought about 10 years ago. It is waterproof to 50m, has an indestructable metal strap (can get links taken out to fit), and never needs its battery replacing. Best thing I ever invested in after years of replacing watches due to mishaps with water, broken straps and faulty batteries.

DH has a family heirloom watch. Unfortunately it costs more than the average good quality watch just to get it serviced so it hardly gets worn.

Superjaggy · 04/10/2018 19:31

Sorry for your / DS' loss Mick.

I'd never heard of Paulin before but they look like lovely watches.

If your budget is lower, Fossil do some nice watches for £100-120 and engrave the back for free too. My DS was given one for his 18th and he loves it.

prettybird · 05/10/2018 15:17

Wax - not only is it a Weegie company, but it has "Glasgow" right there on the watchface ShockWink

WaxOnFeckOff · 05/10/2018 15:46

I know pb I must have had a brain fart! :o I'm consoled by the fact that they've now opened a workshop in Edinburgh. If they start labeling any "Edinburgh" then I'll ask for a swap...

I also thought that since DS is now studying down there I'd have to put my bias to one side.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 05/10/2018 15:48

We did a similar thing for DS this year - DH has a terminal illness and DS wanted a nice dress watch to remember him by. We had it engraved. We got a Hugo Boss one that DS picked, I think it was £200 plus £20 for the engraving.

Mickmusic · 06/10/2018 06:21

Sorry to hear that andnone.... same thought process something in years to come that he’ll remember/value
Been very close to my grandparents he died a cpl years ago after an accident and my gran died beginning of year ... it’s silly thinks I took from house his gardening bonnet and jacket because it was his and what I remember helping with when wee
