Hello!

I posted in chat and it was recommended I post in here.

My husband and I are spending 5 days in Dumfries and Galloway in March and are looking for suggestions of things to see, places to go, good restaurants etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you 😀

We spent 5 days in Dumfries & Galloway in July. Would recommend Wigton for all the bookshops and cafes, Mull of Galloway lighthouse, Logan Botanic garden (interesting as an exotic garden but also a nice cafe) and Galloway Forest Park for some great walks. We particularly liked Kirroughtree forest walks. It's a lovely area and wasn't busy even in July.

Galloway Activity centre is great if you want to some activities (sailing etc) and I thoroughly recommend Kitty's tea room in New Galloway - you'll probably need to book.

Portpatrick is pretty to stay in; our friends have a cottage there & their photos of the area are stunning.
Cream of Galloway visitors centre, Kirroughtree centre.

The dark sky observatory is very good if you can get a clear night. Here's the link and it has information on other things to do in the Galloway forest

Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery and Tibetan Center, its lovely and a great coffee shop

Wigtown for the books. Port Logan gardens are lovely. Port Logan itself where 2000 acres of Sky was filmed has a pretty beach. Port Patrick on a sunny day is like Cornwall. There is a lovely walk along the coast from Garlieston Bay to Whithorn - we walk one way and get the bus back but make sure of the bus timetables!

The Mull of Galloway, round the lighthouse, on a fine clear day is beautiful - you can see Northern Ireland, England and the Isle of Man.

Caerlaverock Castle is amazing, Drumlanrig has some fantastic collections.

Kirkcudbrightshire is a very pretty town with lots of galleries.

Hi - How exciting, it's absolutely stunning round here. I'm a local to these parts and second much of what's been said above. If it's just you and your husband, there's probably some places that will appeal more than others. Kirkcudbright would be a perfect place to be based for 5 days but I wondered if you'd already got accommodation sorted and if so whereabouts? You'll need a car to see some of the best of this part of the world as public transport is limited (but that's all part of the charm) More than happy to share some recommendations.

A bit like walking in an Escher painting

@cdtaylornats - that looks great! But since it is only open to the public one day a year, what is the probability will be open any time in March?

Twirlstwirlstwirls · 11/09/2018 16:46

Almost nil I'd say - tends to be open around the first May bank holiday weekend.
