Moving home with my English family

Hi Scotsnetters

Looking for some advice or experiences of relocating to Scotland.

I grew up in Glasgow, moved away when I was early 20s and lived in a variety of places before finally settling in London. DH is from n England.

We never planned to stay in London but have been here years now. We have two primary aged ds. Recently we had a few weeks touring around Scotland and I'm really wanting to move home now.

DH has never been keen on staying in the SE and has agreed to consider a move north of the border. However it's a big upheaval for us all. Need to find jobs, consider best place to go etc. I still have friends and a few distant relatives in Glasgow area, but I realise we would be pretty much starting from scratch.

How do we make a start with this? Would want to be near Glasgow, somewhere with good schools, where my kids English accents won't be a big problem for them.

I work in secondary education, DH in social services. I guess first thing would be to register to teach in Scotland and find work.

Has anyone else made this move? What other things do we need to Consider? Any advice welcome!!

My sister sold in SE and bought in Scotland. She needed 2 solicitors. It was a rather stressful time so if you can sell then rent for a short time it is probably easiest. She was doing both. The dates were set, the removal van came, packed and set off. Arrived at new house, waiting for keys.... and waited. Apparently there was a delay with the money transfer because according to the solicitor it was a cross border transaction!!!!! They didn't get the keys (officially) until the following day.

Starmudcalm what is the change in status at faslane about?

Thanks everyone for all your ideas, experiences and input. We are much clearer now about how to go about this major change.

It's sounding like selling up here then renting might be the best approach house wise. The two solicitor thing sounds really stressful!

So I think our plan is so far is going to be: get registered for teaching, then find suitable jobs, then decide a good place to move to which fits with jobs, thensell up here and move up and rent for a bit.

Daunting! But also exciting!

it's becoming the UK's only submarine base - which means that folk who go into that service will be based in the area for the whole of their career. they are also building new training centres and stuff as well. means that there will be more people based at faslane but also means there will be less churn of families as more will just live in the local area rather than shifting between up here and portsmouth/devonport.

Oh that's interesting. Thanks Sturmundcalm.

Have a look at Erskine and Bishopton. Easy to commute, massive lot of new builds in Bishopton (Under the name Dargavel). Erkine ‘beach’ is nearby, just a few minutes from the Erskine Bridge.
