Diverse suburbs around Edinburgh / Dundee?

Hi everyone, I'm originally from the area but haven't been back in over 20 years. Now looking to relocate there with family (husband + 2 kids) for work and was seeking recommendations for some diverse suburbs because DH is Asian background.

He doesn't really seek out his own community and we both sort of ended up fitting in anywhere because we've been travelling the globe for nearly 15 years (Australia, far east, US), but I feel it would be nice if he could see a few familiar faces now and then.

From what I remember growing up in the Edinburgh suburbs it was quite an oddity for me to see people of color! I know that's changed though so was just looking for some advice.

Budget and commuting isn't really an issue. Ideally I'm after a suburban setting with good schools and some new housing stock with a little diversity!

Scotland is diverse and multi cultural these days!
Areas near Dundee I would recommend are Broughty Ferry or Forfar. Both have decent primary schools (Whitehills in Forfar would be the most sought after - not sure about the Ferry).

Dundee is becoming more diverse especially around Ninewells area, Ancrum Road the hospital and uni are bringing in a much more diverse population than ever before.

Maryfield/Stobswell in Dundee too.

My knowledge of Edinburgh is not up to scratch.

Thanks ScottishPlan and Notthisnotthat! Great suggestions I will look into. Back in the 90's the town where I grew up seeing a Scots Chinese or Asian was a rare occurrence. Moving to London for college when I was 18 was a real eye opener!

I live in Edinburgh with Asian DH (I’m white), we have lived all over the city and never had any problems. Lots of foreign students around especially in the city, I would think the further out you go (Balerno, Currie etc) the less diverse you will get. I would prioritise finding an affordable area with good schools. We live in Bruntsfield which is probably not what your looking for but in DD class she has Asian, Chinese, Spanish, French, Polish and German children as well as English and Scottish.

I doubt it anymore tbh... I’m in West Lothian, not a particularly naice town, I mean it’s perfectly nice, but but not pricey or sought after to live in Smile

In my street alone, there’s two Asian families and another 3? That aren’t white european (could be more, I don’t know the entire street, lol)

So I’m pretty much assuming the whole central belt is much more diverse than it used to be as commuters have spread out into it.

Are you able to come up and see schools / areas? We are similar to you and while we lived in the Far East, I came over to look at schools before we moved. I went to Balerno primary which is a lovely school but not diverse at all (five years ago). I had an appointment to see Currie bit after what I saw in Balerno, I phoned them to cancel. We now live in the center of Edinburgh which is really diverse and we are happy here. I think it’s really worth having a look at the schools / areas before you make the move.
