Any other Scots living in England and hating the World Cup?

Like now, when the En-ger- land hysteria is in full swing? And about to get much worse according to the score today...

I'm happy for my English DH but every World Cup I secretly hope for England to get knocked out so things can get back to normal and I find my homesickness gets worse as I have to deal with all the "oh you're just bitter because Scotland never qualify/you're not interested cos you're Scottish", etc - all usually said after I've not breathed a word about any of it. Hmm
Plus if I hear fucking 3 lions again I'll scream.

I am Welsh living in Wales. Fed up with England. The fact they brought out a bloody pig on This Morning to choose who would win that was too much, and I know the pig was right but just sayingHmm

If there was a 'like' button Flatwhite I would like your post 👍🏻

I’m like Kathy Beale upthread; because there was a lower expectation at the beginning rather than hype;Gareth Southgate is calm & measured and there doesn’t seem to have been any hooliganism, I’m finding it okish.

The things that annoy me would annoy me in Scotland, namely media that is supposed to serve the United Kingdom as a whole but referring to “we”,thereby conflating England & the U.K.

@KathyBeale is more optimistic on how things will be if England win than I am; I dread Brexiteers seizing on it as “proof” of Britain being leaders on the global stage economically.

I'm same as you Flatwhite. With 2 footy mad kids and DH, am even getting into the spirit of it all myself for the first time ever !

However, I am cringing at some of the anti-English sentiment (football related) I read on Facebook posted by some Scottish friends..Shock

Yes, cheers Jassy and Flatwhite. That sort of attitude is lovely and I'm sure it's appreciated by those around you. This nation is divided, thanks to Brexit, and having something to feel good about - something like sport which can transcend all of the other, many, divisions that exist - is very welcome for most of us.

CreamCol0uredP0nies · 07/07/2018 20:20

I’m Scottish living in England and haven’t experienced any anti Scottish sentiment at all.

I hope England go as far as they can in the World Cup - not usually a football fan but this World Cup is different and so is the English team.
Fewer egos, much less hype than previous tournaments and actually a pretty good example of team work.

My sons had some friends round to watch the match today and it was a great, good natured, celebratory family experience. What’s not to like?

OP perhaps you should go up to Scotland for a week’s holiday to get away from it all.

hudyerwheesht it just came up as wee black flags on mine. Im glad they showed as saltires for you. And your welcome for scunnered it is my word of the day today haha

When I moved to England and for quite a few years I used to cringe at the anti-English comments and would argue with fellow Scots who did not get behind England, given that they were part of the same country. I insisted I was not "that kind of Scot" and I was embarrassed at those who were - I still am, really. I fully got into both Euro 2000 and the WC in 2002 - supporting England all the way and sounding very much like the posters who are being praised on this thread for having the correct attitude - so don't think that my OP means I am incapable of the same mindset, I'm simply stating that after years of shit being flung my way despite all my efforts as per the above I find my support somewhat lacking and therefore, yes, I do(did) hope for them to go out early so the whole thing can be over and I don't have to be on the receiving end of said shit. Plus I find the endless coverage boring, so fucking what - that doesn't make me offensively unpatriotic.
I don't begrudge their success and the nation getting excited/proud/happy, whatever, I just begrudge what I have to put up with as a result of the event existing in the first place. I'm simply more of a target than usual.
And its more than just a bit of "joshing" - its made me go from the attitude/efforts noted above to literally wishing I didn't live in this country.

I thought that posting in Scotsnet asking the specific question of fellow Scots rather than the firing line that AIBU or Chat would have been might find me some similar-suffering ex-pats - that's all.
As there apparently isn't really any, I will bow out; as I said, I've no interest in debating whether or not I'm a miserable kill-joy and/or anti-English - I know I'm not, I'm just an outsider struggling with the current patriotic hype after years of being worn down with xenophobia. My opinion is based on my experience and I'm entitled to it, I've no interest in trying to convince others.
Funny how the kind of anti-English Scot I never was in Scotland is the kind of Scot I'm turning into whilst living in England - and yet somehow I'm at fault. Hmm

I'm English and live in Scotland. I get so sick of the anti-English hatred that I am thoroughly enjoying the moment and the sick faces of my Scottish friends who all wanted England to fall at the first hurdle.

Itchytights · 07/07/2018 22:07

Sorry but you should keep your nasty opinions and jealousy to yourself.

You choose to live in England then accept that the English like football and happen to be very patriotic about our national team.

Posts like yours are really very pathetic.

Oh I see. We’re little naïfs who will understand in time, eh?

Or perhaps we just know nicer people.

Apologies for trampling on your ground; this showed up in Active and I didn’t clock it was Scotsnet. I’ll just fuck off and leave you to it - that seems to be the preference.

Nyx · 08/07/2018 10:29

Posters are being very harsh on the OP, I think none of them would like to be in her position - being slagged off by her DH's mates no matter what she says.

It's lovely that the England fans get to celebrate. Why though do some of them have to celebrate a win against Sweden by piling in to IKEA and trashing the place?

Dont watch it then. Many of the posts that agree with you have underlying issues arounding hating the English.
