Things for active ds(14) during school holidays........with a broken arm 🙁

Ds was really looking forward to the school holidays, going out with friends playing football and tennis, messing about on bikes etc. He had a weeks camp booked away with friends at an activity centre and plans for a couple of 20 mile cycle trips with friends. We had plans to take him and friends to alton towers for the day.

He's broke his arm on the first day 🤕☹️ Camp will need to be cancelled, alton towers too. He will see some of his friends during the holidays but they'll want to go off and do the fun things they had planned.

Any ideas for things to do that will keep an active 14 year old happy during the hols within driving distance of Ayrshire?

Bummer Sad

Has he been seen by a paediatric orthopod? Children's bones heal quickly. When ds broke his leg (and later his collar bone), the non paediatric orthopods gave "adult" healing times. My dad (paediatric radiologist) said the bones should fuse 2 weeks quicker than that.

Iirc, ds was (after we queried it) allowed back to contact rugby after 6 weeks after breaking his collarbone - and out of a sling in 2 weeks. It was "ok" after 4 weeks. But there again, the collarbone is one of the quickest bones to heal.

He might be ok cycling (road, not mountain) within 4 weeks.

He is in a full arm shoulder to knuckles, half cast at the moment (right arm), to allow for swelling, A&E put on and he has an appointment with the acute fracture clinic on Monday for the consultant to look at and decide how to postition and hopefully put on a lighter cast, it is his elbow area so likely to be full arm cast with elbow bent still.

The A&E doc did say 4-6 weeks as children can heal quicker, but said consultant will be able to tell us more on Monday. Fingers crossed it will be sooner rather than later!!!

Oh I’m so sorry. I have a 7 year old with a broken arm at the minute but we’re 1 week in to a 3 week cast and still a week of term to go, so it could be a lot worse! (Mind you I’ve also done a 5 year old in a full leg cast for the full duration of the Easter holidays before too - too heavy to carry/too little to cope with crutches Sad )

How about a wee trip over to NI? They do a 30hr deal on the boat and if you’re in Ayrshire you can’t be much more than an hour away from the terminal. If you time the ferry sailings well you could get a day and a half in NI - get the 6am boat over and you’ll be in Belfast by 8.30am, then get the 3.30pm ferry back the next day. It’s £155 for a car and (I think) up to 3 passengers. Also super cheap deals as for passengers if you could do without the car. (Which you easily could if you were wanting to stick around Belfast area.)

Sorry - typo - that should have been “foot” passengers - not for passengers

Fishing? Maybe he and his friends could learn, they may need to cast for him but at least they would all be outdoors with something to do that he could be involved in. Maybe could do that with a small camping trip?

What about drama clubs?
There’s PACE in Paisley (I had a notion they were Ayr too, but doesn’t look like it)

What kind of things does he like to do? What about a walk and a wild camp. He might not be able to set everything up but he might enjoy being outdoors.
You could go to arran too or a wee cycle round millport on a tandem Grin
