Move to Glasgow

We're currently looking to buy a house in/around Glasgow. I've done a fair amount of research but would love input from people who live in and around the city.

  • Within a 30 ish minute commute by train or bus to the City Centre where my husband will be working (we prefer to use public transport although this may change once we've moved and are settled).
  • Ideally in an area with good schools (doesn't have to be the BEST schools as I realise house prices are going to be reflected in that and we are on a bit of a budget)
  • Green space for our two children (2 and 3) either in the form of parks or convenient local countryside
  • A community that is welcoming to newcomers!

I've heard great things about parts of the Southside, East Dunbartonshire and East Renfrewshire but any specific areas within those (or outwith those areas that I might have discounted) that have a great community feel and aren't a pain of a commute I would love to hear about! Thanks.

What's your budget OP? Have you thought about Stirling/Bridge of Allan/Dunblane? All on the train line for fast trains to Glasgow. Very countryside feel and good communities with loads going on for kids. Also Stirling is a University city so has a bit of diversity in the area and excellent sporting facilities. Some trains go under 30 mins from Stirling with a few extra minutes from Dunblane/BofA, but average is 35-40

Thanks WaxOnFeckOff, we have thought about Stirling/Bridge of Allan but I work in Stirling currently and I don't think it would work well for us. All the areas I would want to live we would be priced out of or are less well connected via public transport.
Our budget is up to about £250k but ideally we'd like 4 bedrooms, or 3 bed and additional reception rooms.

Ah ok :)

How about Larbert? This is very near the station so would suit for getting to Stirling and Glasgow? Decent schools, plenty of open space, handy for the Helix etc.

Hi OP,
East Renfrewshire areas to look at for school catchment would be Giffnock, Newton Mearns, Clarkston, Busby. If you're looking for more rural then Eaglesham or Waterfoot might suit better.
Primary Schools all generally fine. A good number of secondaries usually in top 5 performing in the Country (although that doesn't necessarily mean the best school).

Lots of incomers to the Council area due to the persistently high achieving schools. A well trodden path so usually no issue with integrating to the community.
For your budget you might struggle to get 4 beds. More likely a 3 bed semi or similar but Rightmove sold prices would give you a good indication. You would get more house for your money elsewhere without a doubt so depends whether house or location more important.
Good luck!

I'd add Crookston, Clarkston, Waterfoot, Giffnock and Newton Mearns to your Southside list.

MintChocAddict · 07/04/2018 00:22

Sorry should have said. Excellent public transport links from Giffnock, Clarkston and Busby. You might struggle a bit more in Newton Mearns, Eaglesham, Waterfoot with the less than 30 min commute to City Centre.
For outdoor space Rouken Glen Park easily accessed. Great huge playground, boating lake with restaurant etc and Whitelee Windfarm just beyond Eaglesham. Also fast access down the M77 to Ayrshire Coast.
Silverburn too if shopping/cinema a draw.

Usdingston/Bothwell/nicer bits of Hamilton would work

BrazzleDazzleDay · 07/04/2018 00:27

Id go cathcart/busby or giffnock/newton mearns.

6 years we left glasgow, my biggest regret ever. Can i look at houses with ya? My hearts in it

nordicflamingo · 07/04/2018 00:31

Uddingston is nice, good school. A bit further out but strathaven is lovely with good schools - bus into Glasgow every day although can be a bit of a faff.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 07/04/2018 00:31

I'll second Hamilton/ South Lanarkshire, good links to Glasgow and Edinburgh. I lived in Newton Mearns and found it really unfriendly and up its own arse, but other areas in East ren not so bad!

WeeM · 07/04/2018 00:36

Hamilton you’ll get a 4 or 5 bed detached for £250k no problem in a nice area with decent school. Uddingston or ek probably too. Newton mearns/giffnock/busby/clarkston are lovely but get less for your budget but they are lovely areas, just depends whether you want to sacrifice Home space for location I suppose.

Shawlands, Newlands, Strathbungo, Langside, Battlefield, Cathcart all in Shawlands Academy catchment, as is some of Pollokshields (and you can do placing requests from the rest; all of which to date have been accepted).

Really public transport (buses, 3 different railways lines into Central and the subway, depending on where you are), lovely parks (Maxwell Park, Queens Park, Pollok Park), decent local shopping, lots of eateries on Kilmarnock Road.

I moved to Glasgow a year ago and we just bought a house in knightswood. I absolutely love it!
15 mins on the train into town and you can walk all along the canal to kelvingrove park or the west end.
My husband cycles to work and the prices are reasonable as it's not the west end.
Can't recommend it enough!

Hannah do you have DC What school are they at

cantstopthefeeling · 16/04/2018 22:35

Lenzie in East Dunbartonshire is lovely and has great schools. Good transport links and varied housing.

Grumpybeetroothead · 16/04/2018 22:54

Have you thought further afield to Stewarton or Dunlop? 30 mins to city centre by train, good schools and lots of house for your money
