Re-sitting a Higher

Hi, I had a discussion with a friend recently about sitting a higher over 2 years. I didn't see the point as if they fail (in S6) they can't resit (unless at college) and surely it's better to give it a go in S5 and if fail, then have a second chance in S6.
However my friend said that Uni only take account of the first sitting and will ignore a resit so it's better to study it over 2 years to avoid any chance of a fail.
Any thoughts? I thought a resit counted albeit the Uni may then require a higher grade.

In my experience a resit will count. I’d seek guidance from the school. In general it’s good to aim for what you need in 5th year using 6th year to supplement or enhance.

Usually the resit grade will count but depends on the course. Some competitive courses only count the first sitting and some have a minimum from S5. Some schools who do 2 year highers don't cover the whole syllabus in year one.I think they do two-thirds in year one.

I don't think this is even offered as an option in our school - Highers are a one year course and that's that - whether you sit them in S5 or S6.

If you’ve been registered as in the class for a Higher at (I think) Xmas then you are counted as being taught the course. So even if you then sit in the class for a second d year and take the exam at the end of that second year it would be counted as a resit. Many universities state first sitting for grade ideals but others count it as one grade less. So a re-sat result B would be counted as a C.

My DCs school (low achieving) does 2 year highers in some subjects e.g. maths and English. Everyone starts off aiming for a higher in S5 however if you get below a certain amount by Christmas they recommend sitting in S6. Those not sitting in S5 spend the time they might have spent on revision going back thru things again. In S6 they join the usual one year higher class.

Contact the university - they know best even more than the school and people on here
