Haggis in the oven

LambChopsMcGee · 25/01/2018 13:01

Hi all,

Burns night tonight -- just at home, nothing fancy, but I have a Simon Howie Chieftain haggis, 900g or so.

It had boiling instructions (75 min) but none for the oven. I know the smaller, normal size ones have oven 75 min for boiling 45.

Is there a reason I shouldn't do this one in the oven? If I can, how long do you think it'll take?

thanks!!

I have one of the "serves 2-3" ones in the fridge it was quicker to boil than oven cook iirc. I couldn't believe how long it said.

Anyway I ended up not having it as it wasn't big enough and we had tinned instead. I also thought it smelled a bit unappetising. Sorry.

ttlshiwwya · 25/01/2018 13:21

I usually do a veggie haggis in the oven for me and DD as I can bung it in with whatever I'm roasting for the others. It takes about an hour for the size we usually buy. You could check that it's cooked if you have a thermometer. It's a bit drier than boiling but better than microwave (but that might just be the veggie stuff).

LambChopsMcGee · 25/01/2018 13:23

I don't have a thermometer unfortunately, and I'm paranoid! I wonder why it doesn't give the time on the pack seeing as it does on the wee one.

You'll be right, wax as the small one is 45 min boil, 75 min bake...if this is 75 min boil it'd want hours and hours in the oven!

They didn't have any veggie ones left ttlshiwwya! Mind I like both so better to leave the veggie ones to proper veggies.

I know this won’t help you op but can I recommend to anyone with a small haggis or leftovers that you make Balmoral chicken, it’s so good. Just cut a pocket in a chicken breast and bung the Haggis in, wrap in bacon, stick in oven. Reduce some beef stock and as much whisky as you like and chuck in some cream at the end. Lovely.

ttlshiwwya · 25/01/2018 13:39

I found

To cook in the oven:

Again, wrap the haggis lightly in foil and put in a lidded casserole dish with a little hot water. Place in a heated oven at 180C for 1 hour for a 1 lb+ (500g) haggis. Increase the time for a larger haggis by roughly 10 minutes for every 200grams, up to a maximum of 2 hours. Add more water if necessary - Do not allow to dry out.

I've been undercooking mine!!! As I usually have a 600g haggis.

Balmoral chicken recipe sounds lovely. Might try that myself.

howabout · 25/01/2018 13:43

If you're nervous about making sure it is fully heated you could take it out the skin and bake it in a covered casserole. Use a bain marie to keep it moist.

Helspopje · 25/01/2018 13:50

I do mine in the microwave
Out of skin
Chop into chunks
Cover and blast

Apologies to all traditionalists

LambChopsMcGee · 25/01/2018 13:50

Thanks all, and Balmoral chicken sounds great! Might try that soon!

I also tweeted the company and they have replied already, 90 min in a casserole half filled w water at 200c.

So.

Looking forward to it!
Hope you all have a braw night. Grin

(Apologies, I don't live in Scotland, but my dad is from Lossiemouth and I used to live in Aberdeen, love the place...taking DD later this year, and this will be her first haggis)

My DH is English and he can't cope with the smell of boiling haggis, hence the oven. Anyhow, only half my lot like it so we have deep fried haggis from the chip shop for the lovers and fish for everyone else. Our local Italian restaurant does haggis pizza which is yummy.

We are savouring the last of the Original recipe Irn Bru tonight. Wine

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/01/2018 14:00

I've just got slices this year, will chuck them in the slowy to heat through.
Neeps and tatties ready made in a pack from Asda.

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/01/2018 14:23

Feels a bit odd now that we had ours last week. :) DSs like haggis but one doesn't eat mash and neither eat turnip. So...............DS1, haggis and chips and a bowl of pineapple and a banana. DS2 Haggis, chip and peas and a bowl of pineapple. Me and DH, Haggis with some shop bought mash turnip and carrot and potatoes and peas and all with some creamy whisky sauce.

Thistlebelle · 25/01/2018 14:28

Helspop Grin Microwaving haggis is my guilty secret!

I don’t think it is quite as nice as oven baked tbh but it’s still perfectly acceptable and considerably quicker if you work long hours.

prettybird · 25/01/2018 14:36

We have to do it the traditional way (I've done both oven and boiled/steamed in the past) as dh and ds like to do the proper "Address to the Haggis" complete with stabbing it with a skean dhu so that the "entrails gush out" Grin

SauvignonBlanche · 25/01/2018 18:17

75 mins Shock

I've got that one - better go and put the kettle on. Grin

prettybird · 25/01/2018 18:20

My 900g heritage haggis from M&S says 2 hours and 10 minutes for oven baking.

newtlover · 25/01/2018 18:26

I found a Delia recipe for a kind of haggis shepherds pie- haggis at the bottom then swede (mashed) then spuds on top, it is very nice and you do the haggis in the microwave before assembling, then it al goes inthe oven. I did a large (4 person) veggie haggis in the micriwave for 10 mins on medium.

Builderrage · 25/01/2018 18:29

Right can someone tell me what haggis actually is? Blush our chippy sells it but I'm scared to try it Blush

Off topic. Original recipe irn bru? Beg pardon??? What are they doing to it...?

Haggis currently in the oven here, now worrying I might have dry haggis.....

Helspopje · 25/01/2018 18:42

Yep. They've beggared about with the recipie

SauvignonBlanche · 25/01/2018 18:45

Irn Bru sugar content down by 50%.

SauvignonBlanche · 25/01/2018 18:47

Balmoral chicken sounds nice but what's 'leftover haggis' Confused

Notlostjustexploring · 25/01/2018 18:51

Leftover haggis - that thing that happens when you buy a "feeds 12" for just you and your husband. Usually enough to maybe put on a piece.

Is removing sugar from irn bru not a bit like removing the engine from one's car?Confused silly Barr
Cream eggs, fruit and nut, Toblerone, irn bru so runs my sad list of foodstuffs that just aren't the same.Sad

prettybird · 25/01/2018 19:01

Builderrage - haggis is lamb offal and fat mixed with oatmeal, onions and spices a wee creature with legs shorter on its left side so that it can run anti-clockwise round the mountains of Scotland and a swiggly tail that you need to put salt on so that it turns around and falls over so that you can catch it Wink

Builderrage · 25/01/2018 19:06

Thanks prettybird Grin

lettuceWrap · 25/01/2018 19:26

We had a Simon Howie gluten free Haggis, neeps, tatties and carrots (mashed with some of the neeps).

I’ve microwaved my haggis for the past few years (we don’t just have it on Burns night, maybe 3 or 4 times a year), and IMO this works really well if you chop it into chunks in a covered microwave dish and then add several table spoons of water (it steams the haggis a bit, and the rest is absorbed), otherwise it’s too dry.

I’ll be on the lookout for reduced price gluten free haggis at Tesco this week- they freeze really well Smile
