I know some people have already sat their prelims.

Ds started with English today. He has modern studies tomorrow (both Nat5) and Dd has higher business which is one she is crashing.

DS1 did AH Physics last week. harder than he was expecting but then it wold be if you've done no study. DS2 had English H, he says the critical reading paper went well but the essay questionnot so good. Overall he thinks he might have passed. geography H wasn't as bad as he expected but he still thinks he's failed. Maths for them both this week. AH for DS1 and N5 (again) for DS2.

WickedGoodDoge · 15/01/2018 22:10

Nat5 Maths today. DS thought it was fine. He’s got tomorrow off then English and Engineering Science on Wednesday.

prettybird · 15/01/2018 22:17

Ds had his before Christmas. He's got his AH Maths and AH Physics results back and part of his Higher Modern Studies (which he is crashing).

He's happy with his Maths & Physics results: came 2nd top in both subjects and although there were sections he couldn't do, in Maths, he says it's just because they hadn't yet had long enough to consolidate their knowledge and in Physics he now knows which topics he needs to work on Wink Both teachers seem confident that he's on track for an A (but I'm not assuming anything after what happened with his Higher Physics assignment Angry teacher says that her estimate for every single other candidate was spot on but that ds was a victim of what the SQA called "a very small proportion of candidates who would be affected by the change in the marking schedule" Angry)

He's very confident about his Modern Studies Higher, which he is really enjoying and constantly bending the ear of his Moddies teacher Wink

Readermumof3 · 16/01/2018 20:47

My DD doesn't start her higher prelims until the 29th January. She's got one on the 29th and two on the 30th so is very stressed. The remaining 2 prelims are over the following week. She is entitled to additional assessment arrangements, but after shunning then last year for her N5's she now wants them in place for these exams, which has caused a bit of a fluster 🙈

Sevendown · 16/01/2018 20:49

Mine starts n5s on 29th.

He’s very blasé about the whole thing much to my dismay.

He’s going to get a shock next year when he has to gear up for his highers!

WickedGoodDoge · 16/01/2018 20:54

DS has Nat5 English tomorrow morning and Engineering Science in the afternoon. It’s still snowing really heavily here so I hope he manages to get in OK tomorrow morning! He’d rather get them over and done with. As far as I’m aware, the bus ran as normal today so fingers crossed it’ll be fine tomorrow.

WaxOnFeckOff · 16/01/2018 21:09

No bus here and snow thick. Hoping school is actually just closed and saves all the hassle of to-ing and fro-ing and panicking about driving in it by me. DS2 saying he will find a way to get there and I said as long as you find a way to get back too!

Readermumof3 · 16/01/2018 21:10

@Sevendown My DS1 was the same...until he got his results and got a real fright. No trouble getting him to study for his Highers or Advanced Highers after that. Sadly you can lead a horse to water....🙈DD is complete opposite and puts far far too much pressure on herself. I'm hoping DS2 is a mixture of the two 😂 N5s in 2024

Groovee · 16/01/2018 22:18

Ds said modern studies was quite straight forward.

Dd said Business was her worst possible scenario but she managed.

WickedGoodDoge · 17/01/2018 16:19

Well, that’s English and Engineering Science (Nat5) done. DS thinks they went well. He had messaged me not to tell me that, but rather to say that the bus was 20 minutes leaving school this afternoon so they will be really late home . Bah.

Engineering Science is his hardest subject by far so I’m pleased he’s feeling OK about it.

decena · 17/01/2018 20:05

My DD has done 3 which went well (she's Nat 5) . Maths a disaster and she's really upset. Her worst subject and she's been doing revision for several weeks and had tutors so she felt quite confident. Then the paper had all things she's not come across so I've no idea what happened. She's really worried she hasn't scraped 30% to be allowed to sit her Nat 5. She's hoping for Univ and really needs nat 5. I've said she has 4 months still to go and the worst is she has to resit in S5.
Chemistry next which is her second worst subject. She's now in panic mode and can't even revise.
I'm trying to be sympathetic and supportive as a kick up the bum is just going to stress her more.
I sailed through School with straight As then award winner at Univ which doesn't help her confidence either.

WaxOnFeckOff · 17/01/2018 20:15

DS1 had AH Maths today and DS2 had Nat 5 maths for the 2nd time today - neither did enough (any?) study. Both said it was "okaaaay-ish".

DS2 really wants to pass as he doesn't want to do it again next year and everybody (jobs/apprenticeships/college/uni) wants Nat 5 maths.

He understands stuff as it's being studied but struggles to work out what he's supposed to do in the exam questions (i.e. which part of maths) he says there was a lot he couldn't do but hopefully enough that he did. I've said he doesn't need to know it all, he just needs to know more than 50% and get that right! He failed Chemistry last year too...

Mood wise he is in a better place this year, he is resitting Maths, Doing Highers in English and Mod Studies which he passed at Nat 5 last year and crashing Music and Geography. He doesn't have much chance of passing Geography realistically. he started it late, is crashing it, never wanted to do it and isn't really interested. Hoping just to get him a cluster of Highers and his Nat 5 Maths over this year and next.

WickedGoodDoge · 18/01/2018 16:34

Oh look, DS has his Chemistry prelim tomorrow at 9 and we're supposed to be getting heavy snow again through the night and most of tomorrow. I've already warned him that I might not be collecting himmat lunch as promised!

WaxOnFeckOff · 18/01/2018 17:30

:( Wicked I don't need to worry now until Monday and then they are back to school on Wednesday. I love them being off, it makes my life much easier and less hassle.

WickedGoodDoge · 19/01/2018 07:45

Lucky you, Wax ! I love having them off too - not only do I not need to run around after them, but they can help with the dog. Grin

That’s DC away off on their school bus. It was only running 5 minutes late so hopefully they’ll get to school comfortably before 9:00. The roads were not good at all and the radio said there’s whiteout conditions at junction 3 on the M8 (our junction). I’ve already told DS I won’t be driving through to collect him at 11:30 so he’ll have to either get the train home, hang about for the school bus or see if he can go round to a friend’s to sleepover and I’ll collect him tomorrow. I do like having older children who are self sufficient!

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/01/2018 08:42

Mine aren't very self sufficient :) but it means I can get out to work and back without having to go via school and making sure that they have lunches and all the rest. Do I have the only child who, despite being asked on several occasions, manages to go to his Maths prelim without a pen or a calculator?! Luckily he managed to catch his brother leaving his own exam and borrow both from him.

WickedGoodDoge · 19/01/2018 14:29

I could see DS doing that, but doubt he’d ever admit to it! I did once go to a swim gala where one of the mums sat for four hours to watch her son in one race and then he managed to miss it!

Turns out the snow at 7 was the only snow we’ve had today so I could have gone to collect DS. Blush He did message me to say he and a friend had met up and they were sorting going to lunch so I suppose it worked out OK.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/01/2018 14:33

we've had a lot today and more to come. All buses off and schools shut and bin collections suspended.

DS2 has his faults, but he is open and honest. DS1 on the other hand is an international man of mystery....

Groovee · 19/01/2018 17:43

Ours get no leave at prelims.

OP posts:
WaxOnFeckOff · 19/01/2018 17:56

DS1 has had two weeks off for 3 exams that he hasn't bothered to study for...

prettybird · 19/01/2018 18:05

Ds didn't get study leave as he was "only" doing 3 exams (2 x AH and a crash Higher) and they had to be doing 4 or more exams Confused

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/01/2018 18:07

DSs school seem to want them out at every opportunity! :o

WickedGoodDoge · 19/01/2018 18:10

Well that’s 4 down and 4 to go. They seem to be going OK so far.

prettybird · 19/01/2018 18:15

Let's just say that this year (now he's in S6), I turned a blind eye to when he chose to stay home to study.

School still expects then in for morning and afternoon registration but thereafter, if they don't have a scheduled class, they can sign themselves out. He has however been told off by his pastoral care teacher, when she found out that he'd not gone to classes that were being covered by a non subject specialist supply teacher. On these occasions, I've trusted his judgement - and he says he can do more at home than with a "child minder" teacher watching over the class.

WaxOnFeckOff · 19/01/2018 18:26

Ds1 in S6 doesn't have to go to any registration. He just needs to sign in and out when he is there for class and he is expected to go to assembly once a week. Luckily that's on a morning that he is in school.

If he's at home i'm sure, other than homework, h does nothing...
