P7 proms - WTF??

Last day of term - hooray!! And lots of pics of happy P7s moving on to senior school. Our school had a Christmas P7 dance )in the school hall, party gear) and the school took the kids bowling last week as an end of school treat. In this area that's the norm.

A FB friend who lives elsewhere in Scotland was posting pics of her daughter at the "P7 prom" in a local hotel/function room, suits/kilts for the boys, very posh dresses for the girls, hair, make-up, nails, jewellery the lot. FB friend lives in a fairly deprived ex-mining village where there is high unemplyment and not much cash sloshing around. The parents must have spent a packet on this P7 prom.

When did this become a "thing"? The secondary school here has a "prom" for S6 leavers, although I still think they call it a Leavers' Dance. Last year it was held in a hotel in town and yes they all dressed beautifully and did the whole hair and make-up thing, but there were no limos or other extravagances. my friend's daughter got a lift from her dad, and the girls all got together to do each other's hair and make-up. And these are 18 year olds, not 12 year olds.

So are proms the thing where you are? I'm very glad they're not here.

Hopefully first year will be better for her was a godsend for dd2 she had 1 girl from her primary class in her s1 class so was hardly any drama. 6th year prom is lovely might have bawled my eyes out Grin

My daughter's class had a lot of falling out between the girls as well, although in their case it started in P4 and developed (and there was lots of 'well when so and so was in P5 she said blah blah') - DD took a while to settle into high school but has pretty much found a new group of friends much more on her wavelength.

My son is in P6 and the girls in his class all seem to be falling out with each other as well.

My friend has same age sons and boys are not bothered by this stuff at all but girls jeezo drama after bloody drama

I remember when my DD was at primary her teacher at parents evening said the amount of bitchness and fallings out was unreal from the girls. Whereas DS had no drama at all and is still best pals with his nursery pals (he's now S3).

Definitely a girl thing - have an older DS and there was none of this bitchy nonsense with the boys, they just hit each other and it was forgotten 2 minutes later.

I made the mistake of googling "p7 prom" earlier and looking at the images - dearie me. Never seen so much taffeta, fake tan and fake eyelashes on tweenagers. Just dreadful.

My youngest is starting P1 this year and I bet by the time he's at P7 the end of term event will be a mega deal and not just a day trip out.

Our school used to have a P7 Leavers' Ball. It grew to such an extent (dresses, kilts, make-up, hairdos etc etc) that we became the laughing stock of the area. Kids used to arrive in limos with adoring parents queuing up to take photos.

There was a lot of pressure of parents as this is a very materialistic area more money than sense.

Thankfully they now have a disco with crisps and juice in the school hall. Some parents moaned at first but it's all forgotten now.
