Something to do for an hour or so in Glasgow that might interest teenage boys?

Despite not being too far from Glasgow I don't know it very well.

I've promised DS2 that we'll take him guitar shopping tomorrow. Since we are all off, we thought we'd all go in on the train (me, DH, DS1 (16) and DS2 (15). They've done things like the science centre and riverside museum before so we are just looking for anything else to do that isn't shopping or eating.

Not interested in art galleries etc.

Also need somewhere to eat either lunch or dinner depending on when we decide to go in. Not too fancy or expensive :)

Any recommendations?

Your DS1 sounds like mine: just been to Iceland, the most expensive country in the universe - and came back with nearly all his spending money....

Appin · 12/04/2017 20:33

I went to the Frank Quitely exhibition at the Kelvingrove and there were lots of teenagers. It wasnt just Dc, there were darker characters and stories too. I think. someone who liked anime would like it.

caoraich · 12/04/2017 20:35

Kelvingrove isn't toooo "arty". I really like the armour etc exhibition and sometimes pop in just to see that! Let them wander around, maybe kelvingrove park if weather is OK then for food head up to west end and go for something to eat at the hillhead bookclub hillheadbookclub.co.uk/

  • food is good (burgers etc)
  • it has loads of retro games and consoles for the customers to play that they might enjoy, and it's not usually mobbed during the day

I don't mind that he likes to save but he needs to feel the joy of treating yourself sometimes.

DS2 has saved up for a new Bass which is what the trip is about.

Thanks for the further suggestions, I'll ask then when they come down for supper. :)

Games Cafe on Howard Street? Mono record shop in King street? - great cafe (might be veggie though)

WankersHacksandThieves · 12/04/2017 20:56

Just looked those up ttish Mono cafe is vegan, I'll give that a miss :o

Games cafe might be an option if we just have a lunch but not substantial enough if we decide on dinner - need to work out an itinerary.

We like Cafe Wander for a lunch lunch (baguettes, soup, etc.), also went to Blok with work for food recently, maybe more up your boys street with the music element? Was cheap with good daily deals. Other option might be Solid Rock? Not somewhere I've been though.

An hour is hard to fill with teenagers who don't like art or shopping in Glasgow city centre!!! Maybe Cineworld??! Oh, a powerboat ride from the Riverside? Sure I saw a deal for that on ItIsOn. Not expensive anyway I don't think.

DarceyBushell · 12/04/2017 21:16

Bloc, not blok. And it is bloc.ru, right place!

SnapCackleFlop · 12/04/2017 21:17

Given their interests I think they'll love this place maklab.co.uk/glasgow-workshops
My daughter has done some and loved it! Central too so should suit 😊

TeacupDrama · 12/04/2017 21:22

The Burrell collection is closed but it's too far from the centre for a spare hour

WankersHacksandThieves · 12/04/2017 21:28

Maklab only seems to have things happening from 6pm but it looks a great resource.

Bloc looks interesting, I had to confirm I was 18 before I could get onto the website, can't seem to see if it has age restrictions. Both boys would easily pass for 18 (DS1 could easily pass for 21!) but neither would pass for 25 if they ID on that basis.

So for guitar shopping I'd assume you'll be at least browsing in Guitarguitar. If you're in the Merchant City then you're handy for the Barrowlands Album Pathway - it won't be there forever so worth a look in. There's also the new BAAD centre in the Barras which is proving to be hipster central. Might be worth a poke around.

People's Palace is out that way as is West... I'd rather eat in there than Paesano to be honest (Paesano does quite sloppy pizza which is my pet hate).

For nerdy Byzantine fan, another good day out might be a tour around Glasgow Uni and a visit to the Hunterian.

WankersHacksandThieves · 12/04/2017 21:35

Thanks troll - yes that particular shop has a new complete floor dedicated to Bass guitars so it's where he wants to go.

I'll look up some of those things :)

We decided to get the train down just about lunch time and have a packed lunch on the train, that then gives the dilemma as the day ticket doesn't allow us to travel at peak time so we either need to head home at just after 4 or wait until after 6. So we need extra time to fill or don't bother with dinner and come home. :(

It's not as big and fancy a shop but I'd recommend looking in Biggars the music shop as well. It's a wee family enterprise that has been in Glasgow for about 100 years. Great service and very helpful (although not as shiny a store as guitarguitar).

Anditstartsagain · 12/04/2017 22:04

www.flipout.co.uk/activities/

I think bloc and the solid are adult only.

WankersHacksandThieves · 12/04/2017 22:07

We looked at that store, they only stock one brand of bass. There tends to be less stock with Bass which is why we are heading to the big City :o

Did you call and check as if memory serves they did a lot of refurbed specials instore. (DP also bass player :p )

There's also the old McCormacks Music shop on Jamaica street... it trades under another guys name now but was always worth a look in.

WankersHacksandThieves · 12/04/2017 22:23

Thanks troll - we will have a look about. DS has only been learning for 6 months but his current bass was a 2nd hand one that we bought him for his birthday (so not chosen by him). This one is to be an upgrade and bought with his own savings, he wants something shiny and new and has his eye on a Thunderbird.

Ds loves Sarti's (Italian - on Bath St, Wellington St and closer to centre of town Renfield St). But that might be more because we've taken him there for years for treat meals (ever since he thankfully grew out of Pizza Hut Wink)

Not sure what you can do for an hour or so. Visit GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art) - right in the centre of town, just off George Square?

They do tours of Central Station (including up to the roof and down to some of the hidden platforms beneath the station) but I don't know what time they are and I believe they are normally booked up in advance.

prettybird · 13/04/2017 10:51

...alternatively, you could take them to the "Anti the Rape Clause" demo in George Square at 6pm today Wink

WankersHacksandThieves · 13/04/2017 14:59

Thanks. Been in bought guitar and done the people's palace. No one ready for dinner so now on the train home and well do something else for dinner :) thanks for all the suggestions though. I've saved them for future visits.
