She was born at the end of March, so will she start P1 when she is 5 and 5 months or 4 and 5 months?

Thanks in advance Smile

5 years, 5 months, as the school age year runs March to end Feb.

Haudyerwheesht · 09/05/2016 19:03

5y5m so August 2021

She will be one of oldest.

EvansAndThePrince · 09/05/2016 19:44

Thank you both (she wasn't born this March though so it won't be that year. This is however, irrelevant other than to make sure MNHQ don't start seeing discrepancies in my posts Grin) thanks so much, I get to keep my baby an extra bit longer!

She'll be one of the oldest - with only those kids with January/February (and possibly December and even more rarely November) birthdays whose parents chose to defer them starting school being older.

EvansAndThePrince · 10/05/2016 14:08

Does that tend to be okay though, being one of the oldest??

I would think it is a good thing. My ds is one of the youngest, I would prefer him to be one of the oldest.

prettybird · 10/05/2016 14:42

Definitely. That's one of the reasons why those that have the choice - which you don't - make the decision to defer.

I'm an April birthday and definitely benefited, compared to my brother who has a January birthday (and deferring wasn't common back then, plus my mum wanted to go to Uni).

EvansAndThePrince · 10/05/2016 14:49

Thank you both, she's still a while off but I've been worrying about her being one of the oldest. I'm July so never had to think about it much.

I have a boy whose birthday is the first week of March so he's always been one of the oldest. It's definitely been a huge benefit to him rather than being one of the younger ones.

Thank you Luna Flowers

A friend who is a policeman once said something to me I hadn't actually thought of as an advantage, when they are the oldest in the year and hit 17/18 they will be the first to learn to drive so less likely to take lifts of friends and legally aged to drink so will not be going illegally into pubs underage to keep up with older classmates. I honestly never thought of the other end of school years, but I guess the police see this side all too often.

Groovee · 13/05/2016 17:22

Dd is a January birthday and was deferred as she was really needing it. She's benefitted from being the oldest and a maturity which has helped through the changes of primary to high school and then with issues which have arisen.

Lightbulbon · 14/05/2016 08:14

A disadvantage Of deferring at the other end is they get To 16 before they have sat any exams so can leave school without any qualifications.
