Just been announced that our school will not be open for Euro Ref day. The last day of term is on Fri 24th June but it's only a half day - kids can leave at lunchtime. Am just wondering whether there is any point in sending kids into school for 3 hours. I am going to speak to the Head Teacher but wondered if I'd get any mileage in suggesting that they make the last day of term Weds 25th June. Am in Glasgow.

I can see both sides of it, parents complain when the school is closed for voting and when it's not, the council can't win. It was fairly segregated though, the voters used a part of the school that no children were allowed into for the day and I'm assuming staff would have been supervising the playground as they always do.

I don't think it does apply to all schools dancemom I'd check with your school. If you've heard nothing is assume it is open.

I just find it hard to believe that the majority of these areas using schools don't have somewhere else that the voting can take place, I can see that maybe some rural communities might not have many options of council buildings or community spaces but surely not to the extent that Glasgow city can't find somewhere to shove a few booths for the majority of their areas?

If that is true then we clearly have a huge problem with lack of facilities but that's a different matter.

What's wrong with using community centres, leisure centres, libraries, council offices, they could even set up in shopping centres, empty shops, Drs surgeries/dentists etc obviously the latter might be harder to organise but if there was a will...

It's definitely not all Glasgow schools - ds' school will still be open, even though it's used as a polling station.

So if the school was used as a polling station last week and used to shut (before they were all made Inset days) then the school will shut.

According to friends involved, one of the reasons that locations traditionally used as polling stations stay as polling stations is that candidates/parties who were successful don't like change for fear of alienating "their" support Hmm. Plus schools are "free", unlike other potential locations.
