My 7 year old asked me this morning if we were going trick or treating (as told by his teacher) and I was like this Shock

We're not American, it's guising in these parts. I know this isn't AIBU, but am I?!

#Cybernazis, Santana? Grin

SenecaFalls · 31/10/2015 15:15

It does make sense Hirples. But there are a lot of folks on MN who think that we Americans just made up trick or treating with no reference to ancestral customs. And then use the whole American Halloween celebration to engage in a bit of xenophbic American-bashing (not you, but see the post above referring to "American rubbish culture").

Love the word "thrawn" by the way. Smile Halloween Smile

HirplesWithHaggis · 31/10/2015 15:29

I actually love that Hallowe'en has become such a huge thing in the US, I take it as a sort of compliment. Blush

But then I'm the sort of weirdo who takes it as a compliment when furriners (of whatever ilk, even, y'know, English people Shock ) choose us as a holiday destination, or to actually live here, and join in with our strange cultural habits.

So, anothernumberone, do you think the ToT "thing" went to the US with Irish emigrants?

BackInTheRealWorld · 31/10/2015 15:59

Trick or treating definitely.
I don't want somebody else's brat boring me with some crap party piece. Only your own mummy thinks it's wonderful child now take some sweeties and fuck off with yerself!

Shock

But they are so sweet....

weebarra · 31/10/2015 16:08

Yup, guising here. I keep correcting DS1. And they all know they have do a party piece - crap jokes in the case of the DSs. God knows what DD (2) will do.

Lauren15 · 31/10/2015 16:11

I live down south and I get fed up having to explain to people who say it's an American import that no it's actually a Celtic tradition blah blah every single year. My dcs are horrified at the thought of having to do a 'piece'! I still remember the song I used to sing (" the witches of Halloween whoo hoo!"). Much more fun!

prettybird · 31/10/2015 17:20

Lantern now sitting in the driveway for any guisers in the neighbourhood

Trick or treating? No, it's fucking guising!

New Jo Malone candle fragrance?

Blue Thursday - Love the smell of a candle in a turnip; takes me back 25 years

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/10/2015 17:23

Guising, and yes, they need to do a wee party piece.
Dd is off out in a bit.

Robertaquimby · 31/10/2015 17:27

Guising round here. We had over a hundred kids last year. I listened to a lot of jokes so have made the dds learn poems this year.

BlueThursday · 31/10/2015 19:40

Grin KBear

We have had the grand total of 4 kids who were one group. Wee cuties they were too and did a dance for us!

A bit disappointed we didn't get more I was trying to get rid of the tub of chuppa chupps I bought to stave off morning sickness; they go out of date at the end of November

Groovee · 31/10/2015 21:27

My Dd has been answering the door as she is 15. She's been getting them all to do a turn. It's been great!

giraffesCantDoThat · 31/10/2015 21:35

yup guising

prettybird · 31/10/2015 21:38

We only had one group - of about 6 kids (my neighbours' kids and some of their friends), ranging in age from 6 or 7 to 11.

One of them had even brought his violin and played a wee song! Smile

AmIthatautumnal · 31/10/2015 23:15

i've only had two lots.

They both did party pieces.

It's guiding. Although DD calls it trick or treating and looks at me funny when I correct her

AnnaMarlowe · 01/11/2015 12:51

We had about 100 guisers last night between 6 and 9pm. Aged 2 - 15 (ish).

They all had fab costumes.

They all did a party piece, lots of jokes, songs and poems.

They were all very polite and the vast majority said thank you.

It was a lovely community event. An old cultural tradition bringing colour and light and laughter to a dark Autumn evening.

Groovee · 01/11/2015 13:55

I couldn't be bothered with a pumpkin so made a milk bottle with glow sticks. But the glow sticks wouldn't work. So I put the Christmas lights on instead Grin

trixymalixy · 02/11/2015 17:51

Guising here, but my kids insist it's trick or treating and candy

Nothing annoys me more than the ignorant people moaning about Halloween being an American import.
