Fairer Scotland

This just popped up on my FB - the Scottish Government is doing a consultation on what citizens think would make a fairer society to live in. www.fairer.scot and it says it's on Twitter although I haven't looked there yet under #fairerscotland. The website is a blog with articles about all sorts of people including young carers, adult carers, adults with learning disabilities, support organisations etc. Down near the bottom there's a link to a discussion paper www.slideshare.net/fairerscotland/creating-a-fairer-scotland .

I thought there would be MNers out there with plenty to say on this subject who might want to submit their ideas.

What would make a fairer Scotland? Less poverty/less of a divide between rich and poor, more help available for carers or anyone with additional needs or health problems, cheaper housing, land reform, what?

That looks really interesting , and a very positive thing for the government to be doing - let's hope they actually act on some of the ideas...

Thanks for the link Smile

Yes, I was struck by the difference between this approach and the Tory we're-all-in-it-for-ourselves, fuck-the-plebs one!

The trouble is when left wing politicians say "fairer" it tends to mean taking my hard earned money and giving it to some waters.

Knew this would give me the rage and yet I clicked on the link anyway!

I am an adult carer. I am appalled that in this day and age we expect children to act as carers rather than them being cared for. Any government with the aim of providing a few days out and some respite rather than looking at the woeful state of health and social services for those in need of care is barking up the wrong tree. The consultation blurb smacks a bit of DC's Big Society.

Sorry. Rant over. I clearly need to get out more.

Well, cd, if that's your view than feel free to express it. Hmm

Howabout, sorry to upset you! I agree that our health and social care provisions need a massive overhaul.

Always hate talk of reducing inequalities as it always feels to me that they are saying so long as everyone is the same then that is ok. No it most definitely isn't! We need to raise standards not just reduce inequality; poor health for everyone one and poor education for all is not something to aspire to...

More procrastination and bullshit from the SNP. They have achieved nothing in the many years they have been in govt in Scotland. Devolved public services are getting worse and worse, but instead of doing anything about them they put out meaningless consultations. Look at the state of the police, education and NHS in Scotland - falling standards everywhere. The SNP need to get on and sort those major public services out before trying to make things "fairer". Such a woolly word, what's fair to one person seems unfair to another.

If "fairer" means taxing higher rate taxpayers more, I think many people who can will move to England.
