Help me chose where to live! Commutable to Glasgow

foolssilver · 27/04/2015 20:56

We are so stuck and looking for reccomendations. Neither of is know the area (apart from Glasgow) and have no family connections so can go anywhere.

Requirements are:

Commutable to Glasgow with 45 mins max

Good schools

Would like a sense of community and ability to make friends. Niether of us have many friends here so important.

Have a budget of up to £220 so no where too extravagant.

A bit of a village feel, although doesn't need to be an actual village if you know what I mean.

To give an idea we really like Bridge of Weir but nothing is coming up in our price range. We are bursting out of our flat so needing to move asap.

Thank you!

Eaglesham or strathaven . Both gorgeous

UsainWho · 28/04/2015 17:48

I was also going to suggest Prestwick. Clarkston in south Glasgow is nothing like a village, Eaglesham much more so. In fact, I think Eaglesham is a great choice as you have a village but 10 mins to Mearns Cross or East Kilbride.

ClaudiaNaughton · 28/04/2015 18:04

Eaglesham is beautiful. Lovely tearoom there beside the green on Montgomery Street.

PacificDogwood · 28/04/2015 19:53

I suppose a lot of it depends on how far/how long you are prepared to commute for - I'd never cope with commuting times that are commonplace in many parts of the UK, so would never contemplate to live in Ayrshire and work in Glasgow (I've done that for several years, so know what it's like and know I can do it, but I'd not chose to do it again given the choice IYKWIM).

Which side of Glasgow will you be working at?
Consideration re bottle necks like bridges and certain motorway mergers are worth thinking about too.

DefinitelyMaybeBaby · 28/04/2015 19:54

I second Eaglesham - think it would have all your looking for!

PacificDogwood · 28/04/2015 20:03

Eaglesham's not cheap though lovely as it is.

lucidlady · 28/04/2015 20:14

Uddingston is really nice - it has a great cricket club which has lots of family oriented events on. I have friends who live there and they're always on about the things they do at the club with the kids. Great sense of community there, from the sounds of it.

PacificDogwood · 28/04/2015 20:21

You'd get 4 bedrooms for your budget in Uddingston Grin

Eigg · 28/04/2015 20:22

Pacific it's not cheap but it does tick all the OP's boxes. And it is doable on her budget.

Tbh she isn't going to get cheap if she wants a nice village, with great schools 45 mins commute from Glasgow.

Ps OP Waterfoot (hamlet just outside Eaglesham) might be a good choice too. primary school is Eaglesham catchment. Craighlaw Ave has lots of reasonable 3 bedroom houses.

PacificDogwood · 28/04/2015 20:26

Ach, I know Eaglesham is gorgeous - I am not sure the budget would stretch though.
Can I clarify, is the £220 actually £200.000 or £200/month or am I a bit daft?

I think wrt Eaglesham or Strathavan or Kilsyth it all depends with part of Glasgow she then needs to get to.

I know somebody who commutes from Newton Mearns to the West End every day and it can take her anything up to 1.5 hrs to get home depending on the state of traffic over Kingston Bridge.

Traffic ways matter more than just sheer distance IMO.

Eigg · 28/04/2015 20:31

You are right Pacific it depends on how strict the budget is and how they prioritise the other criteria of course.

With commuting so much depends in timings. My commute took me 1hr 40 this morning but I have done it in 40 mins depending on when I leave.

PacificDogwood · 28/04/2015 20:40

Oh crikey, a long commute like that would just finish me off! But I know I am a light weight in that respect.

AwayAndRunUpMaHumf · 28/04/2015 20:43

Kilsyth is lovely, lots of nice new houses going up, along with lots of older ones on the market. 5 min from Croy, then 10/15 min into the city centre on train depending on whether express or not. Can be in the countryside (Fintry etc) with a short drive.

Lucked · 28/04/2015 20:43

I agree Uddingston, although I had know idea others also thought of it so highly. As well as the hairdressers it has a ridiculous number of churches! You should rent first though.

Lucked · 28/04/2015 20:55

Should also say Bearsden and Lenzie but £££. I love Balloch and if you want to spend you free time in the countryside you should consider it.

One new build development in uddingston has pretty much sold out, there is another but I don't know where they are at with sales.

new build

Watch the location of places that fall under Uddingston, not all will have you feeling close to the village.

Elllimam · 28/04/2015 21:07

East Kilbride is nice, probably more suburban than village but it has a lot of things for kids, good shops and a great mums network with a lot of activities. In fact if you pick EK pm me and I can add you to the mums groups.

backwardpossom · 28/04/2015 21:24

Was going to suggest Dumbarton area. It's lovely and trains into Glasgow regular. I would live there if I worked in Glasgow.

Christinayangstwistedsister · 28/04/2015 21:48

Some nice restaurants in Uddingston too

Eigg · 28/04/2015 21:51

Grin Pacific me too occasionally but I really, really love where we live so it's usually worth it.

PacificDogwood · 28/04/2015 22:11

I bet your commute would be longer if you lived on Eigg though Grin

Eigg · 28/04/2015 22:25

GrinGrinGrin. Pacific definitely would!

foolssilver · 28/04/2015 22:28

Wow thank you! So many great suggestions.

Have looked online and really liking the sound of some of them. I am off work for a whIle recovering from an Op so think DP and I will take a drive round and check out the suggestions.

I only work 3 days at the moment so could maybe handle a slightly longer commute if we found somewhere we loved.

Budget was £220k sorry for the typo. Again we could maybe stretch that a bit for something we loved.

Oops posted too soon.

This has been really helpful as there is some places I hadn't considered at all.

I currently work just on the river by central station. We are moving offices soon but likely to be same area. Definitely still in city centre so Bridge traffic is something to think about.

happy to help fools. If you have any questions once you've had a wee look I'm sure we can help.

7to25 · 28/04/2015 22:38

Torrance. Fits the budget and the school seems good
