Edinburgh airport to Glasgow suburbs

Momagain1 · 26/04/2015 12:20

i am trying to explain to my adult daughter how to get to my home from the Edinburgh airport, and all I know is that when I take the train to/from edinburgh, the announcements say that to get to the airport, alight at Edinburgh Haymarket. i have never flown to/from Edinburgh.

Can somebody explain to me (keeping in mind I am likely to cut and paste your advice) what she needs to do to get from Airport to Haymarket? What signs or counter should she be looking for?

Thanks

Get the Tram - well sign-posted at the Airport.

SirChenjin · 26/04/2015 12:24

Agree - get a tram to Haymarket (there is only one tram) or take the bus link. There is no train station at the airport. Edinburgh is not a massive airport, so it's easy.

SirChenjin · 26/04/2015 12:25

only one tram line that is - there is more than one actual tram Grin

PrimalLass · 26/04/2015 12:26

There used to be coaches that ran from each airport to the other city.

Cupoftchaiagain · 26/04/2015 12:27

There is a city link coach from ed airport to Glasgow Buchanan bus station. What time is flight? Can't shejust gGoogle map it?

chocoluvva · 26/04/2015 13:07

Which suburb? There's a direct train from Ed to Bearsden and Milngavie!

tabulahrasa · 26/04/2015 13:18

If she's getting the train, the tram to haymarket is easiest, but any bus going to the city centre will also get her there.

Momagain1 · 26/04/2015 16:59

Okay. I though the tram was the answer, just wasnt sure how obvious that would be when she was there.

Tram plus train will surely be faster than the coach? Esp. since she can take train straight through to Hyndland. Or at worst, switching at Queen st, which is simple.

At the moment, I only know they arrive in the morning, dont know exact time.

For departure, they need to be at the airport about an hour and a half before the first train leaves Queen St, so booked at an airport hotel for that night.

Yes, of course she could google all. She is a full grown grown up and probably indulging me by saying nice and grateful things when I text, because she has sorted it, or will. After all, the visit to ours is in two parts, bookending a weeks travel through the UK and Germany, which is being planned without my assistance. No, not even the how to get from here to London part.

She can get a bus directly from edi airport to Buchanan St bus station in glasgow. They're very frequent and run late/early.

ShellyF · 26/04/2015 18:34

Coach takes just under an hour.I used to faff around with local bus/tram and trains but find bus easier.

chocoluvva · 26/04/2015 18:39

It's much cheaper too.

3nationsfamily · 26/04/2015 21:20

Direct bus from he airport to Glasgow is the way to go www.citylink.co.uk/citylinkair.php

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 27/04/2015 07:07

I'd probably get a bus to Glasgow from the airport. The tram isn't that speedy - it took me at least 40 minutes to get from town to the airport by tram.

PrimalLass · 27/04/2015 10:26

Tram plus train will surely be faster than the coach?

Doubt it. The tram is quite slow so would take a good while to get to Haymarket. I that time she could be 20 miles along the motorway in a coach.

tabulahrasa · 27/04/2015 10:34

I've done the tram twice...mostly as DC entertainment, from the park and ride at the airport in to the city centre and back.

It's definitely slower than the bus on the same journey and as the coach from the airport is already past most of the slow bits, I can't see how the coach could possibly not be quicker.

If they were getting off the train somewhere other than Glasgow City centre that would be different.

PrimalLass · 28/04/2015 20:57

Even when I lived on Costorphine Rd it was quicker to get the coach to Glasgow from outside my house than going to Haymarket and getting the train.

Momagain1 · 09/05/2015 09:28

Thanks, I have passed on the advice that getting themselves onto the dedicated bus to Glasgow, is the better plan, speed and cost wise. Though if they want to entertain themselves with the tram and train, that works too.

The dear little brother (ds age almost 8) wants to ride the tram. If we go touristing in Edinburgh while grown up sister (dd age 26) is visiting, I think we will get the train to Edinburgh Park(?) and take the tram the rest of the way. He is losing his mind that she will be here on his birthday.

The tram and airport bus will get her from Haymarket. She needs to buy a tram ticket before boarding.

Or she could get off at Edinburgh Park and walk over to the Gyle and get a number 35 bus to the airport.
