My child will be starting secondary school in September- he wants to bike to school but I am worried abuot his bike being taken- I suggested scooting.
What does everyone elses kids take?

At DDs school, a reasonable number cycke (they lock them to the bike rack during the day, helmets compulsory on arrival/departure).

None scoot.

Scooter is a No - too babyish at my DD’s school.

Dd could cycle but prefers to walk 40 mins as roads are not safe. Very sad.

Cycling from late primary into secondary is very popular here, not scooting. Does the school not have a bike cage?

If you were thinking electric scooter then NO.
Any that aren't part of an official rental scheme are ILLEGAL and I believe you have to be over 18 to hire the scheme ones.

I don't think I've seen any child over about 8 on a scooter, even older primary kids see them as babyish and move up to bikes as soon as they can ride without stabilisers. You are right that no one will want to steel it, but your 11yo may well "lose it" (throw it in a Bush) and walk to save the embarrassment.

Just get him a bike lock and let him cycle

I drop my child at school because it’s on my way to work. He’s in year 9. In 3 years I have not seen one secondary age child scooting.

My DD did a 40-minute walk. There was a school bus but she was going through a phase of being scared of strangers like bus drivers asking her questions. Hoards of them walked. It was good socialising time.

It's very rare for dcs to cycle or scoot to secondary school where we are, as the roads are busy and we have free and extensive public transport (inner London).

Non-motorised scooters wouldn't be seen as babyish in our family, as DH rides one to work 😅. They are still used here in the older primary/younger secondary years as roads are not great for kids cycling, and scooting can be quicker than the bus.

Are there now bike lockers or anywhere to store/lock his bike at school? In my day we all walked. There were bike lockers at school but I only knew teachers who cycled to school.
