Half-term European day trip / overnight ideas (leaning towards Milan)

Hi all, looking for some quick inspiration please.

I’m thinking of taking my 11-year-old daughter away somewhere in Europe over half term (14–22 Feb), either as a same-day trip or one night. We’re near London and would ideally fly out early and back late, or stay just one night if it feels more worth it.

She loves fashion, atmosphere and something that feels a bit glamorous / grown-up, so I’m currently leaning towards Milan — but also considering Paris or Venice for novelty.

Has anyone done a similar short trip with a child this age?

  • Did same-day work or was one night better?
  • Which airports worked best from London?
  • Any must-do ideas that feel special but not exhausting?
  • Anything you’d avoid?

Would really appreciate any experiences or tips — thank you.

Budget?

You’re thinking a day trip??? To Milan??

Of course overnight is better but you don’t need me to tell you that surely

@TodayuneedFair enough — we’re comfortable with short-haul travel and I’m specifically looking for tips from people who’ve done it.

Milan, next week? You do know the Winter Olympics is hosted there? It will be incredibly busy

One night definitely better. Otherwise most the day gone travelling.
It’s also Carnival season next week, so not sure if that affects Venice

A day trip to Milan is just insane.

Is that because of budget constraint?

Have you been to Milan? I wouldn’t recommend it to an 11 year old. It’s not very accessible for tourists as the ā€˜glamour’ kind of sits behind closer doors/restaurants/bars and there isn’t all that much to do that is ā€˜fun’.

same about Paris to a point (but would choose Paris over Milan)

i would go to Venice. For 24- 48 hours you get a LOT of bang for your buck because it’s just so interesting. My 9 year old found it brilliant fun. February is also off season enough for the city to be not entirely ruined by masses of tourists, so it’s more atmospheric that way. stay one night though - it’s at its best at night and early morning when day trippers not around.

To make single day work you need airports with several flights a day or at least an early one out and a late one home. That will limit you. I would avoid Italy due to winter Olympics. Maybe Paris or Madrid? Barcelona also must have a fair few flights. I was looking at Copenhagen before christmas but it is too cold for me.

Re Venice - you can also get the boat directly from the airport as your transfer so the excitement starts as soon as you land and therefore lessens the travel pain. ideally book accommodation near one of the transfer stops 😊

Paris overnight with a good plan of where to go would work. Galerie Dior is pretty glamorous.
