My daughter is in first year of school. Her birthday is in January and I would like to take her to lunch at a restaurant. Do you think the school will allow me to pick her up at 12 o’clock?
thanks

I will try to make a request to the head teacher if he says no that's fine

I think that’s the worst of all of the options. You are just wasting the time of a person who is running a whole school. He can’t say yes, unless it’s a private school, and he can’t stop you. It will be an unauthorised absence regardless. But you are drawing attention to the situation by speaking to the head.

Please don't start teaching your child that school is optional. Children do better if they have parents who think that education is important, so why not give your child the gift of having that kind of parent?

Have a lovely birthday tea instead.

If it’s a state school they are simply not allowed to authorise such an absence! There are rules laid down and head teachers cannot overrule them. As an attendance officer I have to ask for proof of appointments during school time, I would also be aware that it is a child’s birthday.

On a personal level I would never have dreamt of taking my children out if school for a birthday or expecting them to lie. How would you feel if your child came home and said “Miss Teacher wasn’t in today because she’s gone out for her birthday”? Take her for a treat after school or at the weekend.
