Summer holidays: is six weeks too long or not long enough?

If they got rid of half-terms and added them to the summer holidays, they could start at the beginning of July. Would that be too long, or do you think half-terms are necessary?

Wow really, how do you accommodate child care for that length of time of you work?

7 and under can go to nursery during the summer, after that a lot just manage by themselves, play with friends etc. In cities they have supervised playgrounds where they can spend the day for free and get a free hot lunch but small towns like mine have nothing.

It's very short. Over here in Italy they get around two weeks for the Christmas period, a week at Easter, then three months for summer. They get homework for those holidays, however there has been a lot of request to reduce the amount of homework as there's already enough pressure and home work during term time. Most kids go to summer camp until the week of August when most Italians go on holiday, the really lucky (rich) ones are whisked away to the sea for the whole three months!

I also think the Christmas holidays should be moved forwards a week, so they run from the 18th Dec at the latest and then school restarts on 2nd January. More time for Christmas activities beforehand and everyone has done enough hanging around eating sweets/playing with new toys by the end of December, no need to prolong it!

I’d love a longer summer holiday but not at the cost of loosing half terms!
I’d be happiest with 3 weeks off at Christmas and Easter, breaking up a week earlier for summer and keeping half terms. Making the school year 3 weeks shorter, but I think it’d be better for mental health so sustainable. Local independent primary school is 32 weeks a year, and about the same length school days without optional before and after school childcare / clubs…. So I think it’s do-able and beneficial for kids.

Scotland has 4 terms already
Autumn 14th August to abouut 5th October then 2 weeks break,
Winter 20th October to 20th december 2 weeks break
Spring 6th january to end of march long weekend (5 days) or a week off in February Easter holidays nearly always 1st two weeks in April, if easter is very early or very late it's a exra long weekend
Summer term 16th April to end june, last week nothing happens Long weekend in may
May is exams in Scotland

personally i like the 2 weeks in October often nice weather to go out if you want to go abroad most places still open at beginning October
February is dark and damp a long weeknd to recharge is fine
personally would like 7 weeks in the summer last week of june all of july and first two weeks August
I do not think any country in Europe has less than 6 weeks in the summer, it's nice for kids to get to enjoy the summer weather free days out much easier in summer than winter
