Summer holidays help

What little things are you doing for your child to help over the summer holidays. DS is going in to year 4 in sept. Do you have any goals you set or any ideas what you'd like them or you to achieve? Extra reading, tines table practice that kind of thing...,

You’ll get lots saying ‘let kids be kids’, ‘they need a break over the summer’ etc but I think it’s good to things ticking over.

Ive got an agreement with my two who are 8 and 6 that we do ten minutes of maths per day. Usually do it before we get dressed. We spend time visiting and library and try out new authors and I’ve bought them new notebooks but try and make writing purposeful e.g. a list of places they want to go, a poster inviting their grandparents for tea etc.

My DDs were strugglers.
At that age we used to

  • do the library summer reading challenge

  • do a daily diary, (which could be story)

  • do some key skills maths so as not to forget / catch up

Only other reply and you’ve agreed with me!😄
My children aren’t behind but aren’t sailing through, I think it really helps to go over concepts they clearly haven’t grasped yet.

Plenty of games use reading and maths skills.
Postcards are a good way to get some writing in.

We’re doing daily reading, me to them and them to me, as well as some CGP maths and grammar books, although not every day.

it’s good to keep an eye on the ball!

They read for half an hour a day, we try to do some daily maths, TT rockstars on the iPad is good and only a nominal annual fee. We have reading eggs and another program for younger dd who has SEN.

I bought a schofield and sims arithmetic book and try to do 3/4 pages a week with older dc. They do lots of art and a bit of writing themselves.

Just enough to keep things ticking over and stop them forgetting everything. Before this year I was in the ‘let them be kids’ camp, but lockdowns and home learning have changed my thinking.

We're doing Maths Factor Summer Adventure, Library Summer Reading Challenge and Fonetti Read Aloud Challenge :) only a few minutes a day, but just keeps the skills fresh in her mind (she's going into Year 2 in September)
