Hi mums,

my maternity leave finished a couple of days ago and I have decided not to return to work.

my son is only 7 months old and I don’t feel comfortable leaving him on crèche or childminders etc as he is still very dependent on me.

and also my work hours and childcare hours just wouldn’t line up as it’s late nights.

i am a single mum so it is just me and my son.

I am just wondering will UC stop paying me for leaving my job and will they penalise me to look for work?

i will look for work once my son is abit older but right now I just don’t think the time is right.

i don’t want to come across as lazy.

You don't have to work at all until your child is a certain age, and then it's staggered as their age increases.

As a single parent you don't have the requirement of getting a job until your child is 3 years old.

Will they make me attended meetings with work coach each week?

Are you somehow unaware of how chat forums work?

If you don't want to participate in this thread, simply click on a different one but stop being so rude

I believe its age 3. Yoy could maybe loom at doing some online courses if it would help you go into a different line of work? Congratulations on your baby and enjoy your time with them xx

Thank you so much, I don’t want to come across as lazy, I just personally think it isn’t the right time to go back yet xx

From when baby is 1 they'll expect you to go in once every 3 months. At 2 it's once a month and at 3 it's probably weekly or fortnightly as they expect you to start actually looking at that point. Before that it's just prepping for going back

IVFmumoftwo · 31/03/2025 18:42

From the age of two you start getting monthly meetings. At three you will told to start preparing for work and looking for it.

They won't stop paying you but they won't make up completely for the loss of your wage as it does work out better if you have a job on UC.
