I can't seem to encourage my two year old to drink we had a bath as he splashes loads and we have been playing with his trains but I can not get him to drink anything.

Any tips please the more I ask the more he says no.

Ice pops?

Baboutheocelot · 18/07/2022 10:10

Mine love metal straws. What about a new bottle or cup? Do they like milk?

wordlewordle · 18/07/2022 10:11

Will he take a bottle? That's what I'm doing with my almost 4yo!

NoSquirrels · 18/07/2022 10:12

How much does he usually drink? If it’s as much as normal, don’t panic. As PP says, ice pops or ice lollies, watery foods etc. If you’re staying in and staying cool don’t worry at the moment - 2 year olds LOVE a battle if they can seize a bit of control
so don’t make drinking a battle…

KarrotKake · 18/07/2022 10:12

Ice, icelollies, cucumber, melon, jelly.
Fluids don't need to be out of a cup - they can be food too.

Strugglingtodomybest · 18/07/2022 10:12

Won't he just drink when he's thirsty?

But yeah, ice pops. Or just ice cubes to suck on?

LabradorFiasco · 18/07/2022 10:12

The more you make a big deal of it, the less likely he is to drink. We model lots of drinking - ‘mummy’s thirsty, mummy is having a drink’ - making sure his water is right there as you do it. Also giving teddies and trains a drink is handy. Otherwise grapes, melon, strawberries etc… Good luck!

KangarooKenny · 18/07/2022 10:13

Ice lollies. Melon/watermelon. Tomatoes/pepper/cucumber.

MintJulia · 18/07/2022 10:14

Or offer him satsuma segments or sliced grapes with his breakfast. Cucumber slices and cherry tomatoes with his lunch, they are all 99% water.

When it's hot, we play 'Juice shop' and set up a shop in the garden with jugs of different squash, water, whatever and little plastic cups (free Mr men ones we got from MacDs) and they play coming to the shop, choosing what juice, which cup, what colour straw, adding ice etc... Mine seem to drink a lot more when playing this!

KangarooKenny · 18/07/2022 10:15

Try making the drink new and exciting, like a new cup, a curly straw, ice cubes, fizzy water. Anything to make it exciting.

Thank you so much for this

Can you make yourself a drink of water/juice in a big gin/wine glass, lots of ice, a straw and ask if he wants some of mummies special drink.

Play cafes or something - drinking out of toy cups can be more interesting too.

PeekAtYou · 18/07/2022 13:31

Pour yourself a drink and offer him the chance to drink from your glass. Other people's good and drink always taste better by toddler logic.

Saisong · 18/07/2022 13:33

Totally agree with making a game with jugs, cups, ice etc. They will drink while playing. My DS was an absolute sucker for anything that had a dispensing tap - he would drink (and pee) a ridiculous amount just to be able to turn the tap on and off.

Doveyouknow · 18/07/2022 13:38

If you're inside and relatively cool he might not need much to drink. Does he normally drink lots?
