Do people assume you're bored and lonely?

I'm really happy as a sahm and I don't have time to get bored 😂 and I also have lots of mummy friends so if I do get 'lonely' I'll chat with them or go out for a coffee/playdate.

My neighbour is lovely but keeps saying to my partner about how bored and lonely I must be and when do I plan to return to work as I must be so fed up.

Anyone else get this?

Yes, all the time, usually with them head tilting asking "What do you do all day?

Well there's letter writing, embroidering cushions, decorating hats oh, wait, this isn't the Victorian era, the internet has been invented. The sheer number of things to watch on Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, podcasts to listen to, books to read either from the library or downloaded onto a kindle or as an audiobook, how can anyone be bored?

Lonely is different, but being alone isn't necessarily lonely. I have been a SAHM for 15 years+ both my sons are teenagers. I am yet to be bored or lonely.

That was in reference to being in the house, obviously there are places to visit, walks to be had etc.

I think people do assume it, and to be honest, it’s true; I’m a SAHM to two preschoolers, and there’s only so much entertainment value I can get out of Mr Tumble and playing Hungry Hippos Hmm

Yes and it drives me nuts. Every time someone asks if I'm going to go back to work I reply 'no, are you going to give up work'. Then they see how rude this question actually is. I am rarely bored, even in lockdown. There is always something to do.

My kids are older teens and I get asked the question even more. Why do folk think you can only contribute to society or relieve boredom by taking on paid employment. Yes I'm lucky in that we don't have any financial worries but I'm of an age where folk start to dream of early retirement so why the hell would I consider a job. To prove what, to who?

I'm in my fifties, I'm knackered, I've been the homemaker, cook, cleaner, doctor, psychiatrist, accountant, gardener for the last 18 years. I'm now quite happy claiming some 'me' time back to please myself. Adventure and travel beckon once Covid is over, something I've been waiting all my life to do!
