When people ask what you do for work

Do you just say, I'm a SAHP? I'm not ashamed of it at all but somehow people kind of go "oh" Confused

I get a bit flustered and just go "Oh I don't, I'm at home with the kids, maybe when they're older". It's a bit of bullshit to get them off my case really as I don't need to go back to work and much prefer being with the children. I've worked in the past as various things and have never found a profession I love or feel comfortable with so I don't have a burning desire to do anything specifically Blush

I have never asked anyone this question and don't get why people need to. I wouldn't want to make anyone feel awkward! I would just say I'm a fulltime zookeeper to my monkey DS Grin Thankfully no-one has asked yet.

NewLife4Me · 02/06/2016 12:33

lady of leisure, sex goddess, mother.

What do you do? I list the things I do for kids, me and dh, hobbies, interests etc.

orangebird69 · 05/06/2016 18:43

I just say 'I don't work. My husband does'. Usually shuts people up.

LadyAntonella · 05/06/2016 22:05

I actually do say "I'm a stay-at-home-Mum"... Blush. I had no idea that was an odd thing to say tbh! Oh well, people already think I'm odd so this probably just confirms it for them. Grin

ilovechocolate07 · 27/06/2016 17:42

I say I'm a stay at home mum. I don't like housewife lol. I know what you mean about feeling like you need to explain yourself but really, you don't. I've been a student leaving my newborn with my mum while going to seminars and lectures, full time, part time and a stay at home mum over the past 9 years and it has all blurred into one really.

Cakescakescakes · 27/06/2016 17:48

I say 'I'm at home with the kids'.

Bravada · 27/07/2016 10:42

Hm on forms I have often put 'Mother' although I know they will pick some other designation because they won't have that in their system.

I actually don't mind 'Housewife' as it does sound a bit like a profession, like 'Midwife' Grin. But it seems a bit old fashioned.

SAHM is a bit of a mouthful and sounds as if I mope around the house all day, whilst we are really out doing stuff. Go-to the-park mum would be more like it!

Full-time mum I don't like because it implies that people cease being mothers during office hours.

I suppose 'homemaker' is the best one. Maybe I'll start using that.

In reality in conversation, I feel a bit embarrassed, laugh and say "nothing". Which I know I need to stop!

WibblyWobblyJellyHead · 27/07/2016 10:48

I'm not a SAHM as the kids are all at school. I'm not a housewife because I hate housework and do the bare minimum. So generally when people ask what I do I say I watch Netflix and eat biscuits all day.

Grin

I say i dont work , im much too busy being a sahm which enables my dh to work long hours which he wouldnt be able to do if i was working too

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/07/2016 11:04

I'm the personal assistant, nanny and housekeeper to a very wealthy executive.
When they meet my scruffy unkempt dh they are very surprised.....

voluptuagoodshag · 09/08/2016 10:35

I hate being asked this! Especially as both mine are older and at school. People can't seem to believe that I don't go back to work in some form and that I basically have the life of riley. Oh if only. And I too get flustered and feel I have to justify my position then get really fecking cross because they made me feel this way.

Zippidydoodah · 17/08/2016 21:36

I say lady of leisure too, with a laugh, because anyone who knows my three children knows there's nothing leisurely about looking after them! Grin

asquires · 29/09/2016 07:23

I say I'm on maternity leave at the moment but I have my own business! I did have a full time job but now I'm at home with my 3 month old I still wanted to be able to contribute but it gets me out of the house meeting new people too! Smile

Gowgirl · 29/09/2016 07:28

Housewife here

missyB1 · 29/09/2016 07:29

I tell them I'm too busy to go to work! Very true actually Grin

MaisyPops · 16/11/2016 12:25

Friends of mine go between 'stay at home mam' or 'i dont work as im at home with the kids'.

The one that annoys me (and I see it in Facebook too) is 'full time mammy' as if somehow all the other people who are working parents are somehow less of a mam. Then again the people on my Facebook who do that also post endlessly about their job being harder than everyones and feel they deserve medals for doing chores that everyone (working or not) has to do.

MommaGee · 21/11/2016 22:36

Stay at home mom here.

I wonder if I should say carer as DS gets older but for now sahm is apt, staring out the window haha

'I took early retirement' is always my answer. What irritates me more is the SAHM who claims to be a full time worker as she sells the occasional birthday cake to a friend and neighbour. Really ?

OpalTree · 03/01/2017 10:25

I appreciate there may be many appropriate ways to answer this. But 'I'm a mother'? (As a full time job)?Confused

OpalTree · 03/01/2017 10:29

Oops. Was replying to above quote from upthread to say that people who say this are maybe looking after their kids full time? People could say "I look after my children full time" or "I care for my children full time" as that is accurate and presumably wouldn't be able to be considered offensive by people who are offended by "full time parent."

OpalTree · 03/01/2017 10:32

Or offended/confused by But I'm a mother'? (As a full time job)?

notangelinajolie · 03/01/2017 10:49

If they ask me in a particularly patronising sanctimonious way I just say I'm a nobody - just a mum. That usually shuts them up.

And while I'm here ... Does anyone watched 'Tipping Point' and 'The Chase' on ITV? It really gets my back up that the contestants have to say what they do Angry. Why is this info even needed - what the hell difference does it make to anything knowing what they do???
