I have DC 14 and 12 and I have the same question. On the one hand I want them to be capable of doing all the household chores and get on and do what I ask of them if I ask. On the other hand I feel they are busy with school etc and a lot of the time it is easier for me to do things as part of my day than making a big deal about them doing their share.

A lot of the chores like bed changing and room tidying work better as a team so I help with theirs and they help with mine. I only do household cooking, cleaning, laundry if they stick to the house rules whereby them and their stuff are where they are meant to be when they are meant to be.

disclaimer - my DC are primary age, so am not speaking from experience

I think as a minimum they should not create extra chores for you - eg all cups etc to be returned to the sink/dishwasher
laundry should be sorted into baskets, and then put away once sorted back into piles for them
changing own beds
not leaving crap everywhere
returning stuff to its rightful place
should wash own plates (or load into washer) if having lunch or a snack when no-one else is there

doesn't sound like much, but having spent a weekend recently with 17 and 15
yo niece and nephew, doing the above would have been a vast improvement!
