What's it like living in Millom?

Hi Folks. We're currently living in France but missing home and considering buying a terraced house in Millom to move back to. We've always lived in very rural and isolated communities but wondered if anybody could give us an idea of what it's like actually living in Millom? Is there much crime? Is there a good community spirit? Is it easy to be accepted? Any arts & crafts groups, yoga etc? My husband is an active 73 year old and I'm 58 and will be hoping to find a few hours part-time work. We love walking, cycling and I'd love to do some nature charity volunteering too. Any inside info would be very much appreciated! Thank you! 🤗

I don't know what it's like now, but 25 years ago, I found it depressingly quiet. Other people I know have moved there and loved it, so hopefully it's improved now. I lived there to escape a much busier town in Cumbria, and in that respect it was worthwhile, but there wasn't enough going on for me.

Having said that, we change a lot through life and it's probably somewhere I would love now.

Thanks sosickofarrogance. I've done a lot of years of depressingly quiet in France so that rings alarm bells for me! I love rural and isolated and wild woolly weather but I do like to know there is activity and community that I can dip in and out of. I've not received any other responses so perhaps will have to take a fortnight up there to get a feel for it myself. Have spent time in Seascale at a friend's place in the past and plenty of holidays in the Lakes but never really visited Millom's corner before. Guess the only way to know is go and feel the vibe of it. I see they're building a big new leisure centre which is a good sign that at least there's some investment going in to the town.

Aah, the leisure centre sounds much better. It was a beautiful place for walks, I remember finding lots of interesting things down on the shoreline. It's probably well worth a visit, anyone can offer you their experience, but you have to choose!

Please do keep us in the loop.

Yes, I agree. It was more to get a feel for crime rate, any anti-social behaviour etc. The shoreline sounds beautiful. I have a deep connection to nature so I'm sure I'd be so happy from that point of view at least. Be interesting to see how people feel nowadays about the community itself. I see they're crying out for a real supermarket as have to drive 30 miles with the Tesco there being so expensive. Big thing to factor in. Anyway, thank you so much for your input. I think as you say, only way is to go and found out physically! x
