Hi, looking at putting our property on the market to move to the countryside that has rail links to Manchester. Wanting a quiet life for 2 retired adults. Also wanting good walks and cycling. Any recommendations?

Anywhere on the Hope Valley line (Manc - sheff) makes the most sense for that criteria

Talkinpeace · 11/07/2025 17:52

Buxton.
While you are fit and able lots of outdoors stuff
When you are older and frailer plenty of support

RedNine · 11/07/2025 17:55

Northwich area might be a possibility? Barnton etc?

That would be my dream house but unfortunately abit over budget. We don’t want to really spend more than £450,000

Clitheroe has a direct train to Manchester and is lovely.

Do you want a doer upper or already done? How many bedrooms? Where are you now (vaguely)?

We are in Saddleworth Oldham but it’s not great. Oldham is a s hole and is grim once you come out of Saddleworth, Huddersfield on the opposite side not great. So want something picturesque and walks and cycling. We want something done but not to close to neighbours.

Just seen your post about neighbours. You could look at the area.

BriefHug · 11/07/2025 19:39

The line between Manchester Piccadilly and Cardiff goes through Shropshire and Herefordshire - cycling, walking, nice pubs, reasonably priced property, potential to minimise neighbourly contact, all along that route.

I literally chucked in a random search
BUT
Rural living is dependency after age 75
whereas living on the edge of a small vibrant cultural town works even after zimmers are the only transport
and I've never fully understood why Buxton is so cheap

(I live on the south coast)

Marple / Marple bridge. Well served village with 2 train stations. The canal network and the middlewood way. Both flat paths.

25-30 mins into Manchester and community feel. Nice restaurants. Marple bridge can be a bit hilly in parts.

I was going to suggest Marple or Marple Bridge as well. Or around Poynton. New Mills may be worth a look.

Just looked unfortunately not enough property in our budget and we will only do a detached house or bungalow after having previous bad neighbours.

Buxton is lovely and the surrounding countryside is amazing.

WTDress · 12/07/2025 05:53

Macclesfield and surrounding villages.

HollyGolightly4 · 12/07/2025 06:05

I second clitheroe and the Ribble valley line.

RobinGoch · 12/07/2025 06:45

I third Clitheroe and the Ribble Valley, beautiful area and one hour to Manchester Victoria 😀

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 12/07/2025 07:44

We're near New Mills. Semi rural, good rail and transport links. Services are good in the area.

Kaftanesque · 27/07/2025 11:36

Whilst Huddersfield centre has declined-but lots of redevelopment going on -the outlying villages like Marsden and Slaithwaite are really buzzing now.And again glorious countryside on the doorstep.1/2 an hour to Manchester centre.
