Hello, looking to relocate to Hampshire. We'd like a nice town an a train link to London not too far away but to be rurally based. Schools not a concern. Any suggestions of nice areas or villages would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I am really surprised to read this. One of my brothers and his family have lived in Alton for 25 years.

They love it. I love visiting them and 'rural market town' is exactly what it is. We usually go for a lovely walk with the dogs, the town is surrounded by gorgeous countryside.

What do you dislike about it?

I was a bit surprised too, I live very near and it's not that bad. But different people like different things I suppose.

This is absolute nonsense! I live near Wickham and this is not the case at all!

It is absolutely true , can’t think why you would say otherwise .

Bizarre. You cannot live there because this is now how it is at all.

Never had an issue with parking on the square. It is very much still a charming place surrounded by a lot of countryside.

Check southern West Sussex op. Littlehampton/bognor/worthing you’ll have the sea and the South Downs on your doorstep and trains straight to London Victoria. Might be cheaper than rural Hampshire too

I do live there , that’s how I know , it is unrecognisable from the village I moved to and will be more unrecognisable with Welbourne .

Petersfield is worth a look.

'The roads are already gridlocked 😂

You can’t get parked in the square anymore unless you’re very lucky or prepared to wait 😂

The historic village with its chocolate box houses and lovely walks is being turned into an urban metropolis, very sad . 😂'

'Metropolis?' Where is this metropolis? Southampton? Portsmouth? London? It is not Wickham.

I don't know where this is but it is NOT Wickham!

Surrey isn't all commuters and schools. It has lots of woods, heath and hills. It's just a matter of finding an affordable house in a village near a station e.g. Woking.

There’s no point arguing anymore , I’ve no idea why you are not seeing the changes to the area .

I have to agree. The Wellborne development is causing a bit of traffic but not majorly - I did a run to my daughter's school today and it took 3 minutes longer than usual.

@Xanadu124 Bishops Waltham, Swanmore and Waltham Chase are popular - it's all a bit more built up than it used to be and the Doctors' surgery is feeling the strain a bit, but if you need to get seen you can. The M3 and the M27 are both about 15-20 minutes away. 3 big towns within 20-30 minutes. 20 minutes to the hospital or the train station to London. In fact 10 minutes to the train station if you don't mind a connection from Botley.

Wickham has never been chocolate box. It was always the more 'towny' part of the area heading towards Fareham.

ZOMBIE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sure the OP has either given up on the idea or moved by now.
Hopefully they decided to go elsewhere. I live in south Hants and my village has been completely ruined by the local borough council. 20 yrs ago I moved to a large village and it's now a town due to 1000's of houses being built since 2020 which are nearly all very expensive executive style townhouses.
None of the buyer's (apart from 1 person I know) are local and my kids can't afford to buy or rent here. It's all flight from London because it's only 1hr20 to Waterloo. I used to live on the edge of the countryside now it's quite a distance away. I hate what the area has become and that development just isn't stopping which is ironic because it's destroying what made it attractive in the first place.
Rant over - please don't come here

I'd want to see how it is after Welbourne has been built enough to be lived in though.
