It’s got a great service station/shop/restaurant!!

Jennalong · 01/08/2024 06:37

Why Tebay in particular , ok it's got the best motorway service station in the UK ! But it that's a reason not to live there , right on the motorway , it probably won't be the rural idyll you are expecting .
I live in Cumbria , and nothing against Tebay , but I'm sure you'd find loads of places quieter than there .

Bjorkdidit · 01/08/2024 06:59

What's the particular attraction of Tebay vs all the other places that are 'away from a busy city'? Where do you live now?

I can see that Kendal and Penrith are about 20 minutes away, so manageable if you're organised as it would be an annoying trek to have to go out for milk for example, especially along country roads in winter when it's dark most of the day.

But then if you are very rich, you could just buy all your groceries at the service station Grin

There's lots of much nicer rural locations around that area. Is there a reason for your looking at tebay in particular?

Lakes24 · 02/08/2024 05:48

It’s mainly because we’ve been offered a house from a housing association.

wouldnyou not recommend?

it’s just other locations the rent is so high

I thought it would be best of both worlds like rural but only 20 mins to Kendal so not too bad

My parents followed my sister, to Penrith. They absolutely love it. Lovely town, lovely people, and so close to the Lake District, without the prices.

Toddlerteaplease · 02/08/2024 11:08

If you're been offered a house? Then take it. It's a no brainer.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 02/08/2024 11:11

You have been offered a social housing property - grab it with both hands !!!
if it doesn't work out you can always swap in the future - or is it a swap you are doing ?

Saucery · 02/08/2024 11:15

I would definitely accept a house there. It’s not the most ‘happening’ place in the area or the most picturesque but it’s easy to get to other places, as you say. I wouldn’t be filling up with petrol at Tebay Services though, their prices take the piss and then some.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 02/08/2024 11:29

do you/anyone in your family work - do you or anyone in your family need to find jobs if you move ?

do you drive/have a car ?

do you need schools ?

as i just looked on Google maps and yes it's a small place, the social housing looks to be traditional and well built with decent gardens, and I can see bus stops in the village and several churches.
didn't see a ' corner shop ' so you will need to be organised - but that's because I have always chosen to live with say a 5 min walk of a Co-Op etc. - even tho for 14 years + I have actually worked in a supermarket !

Midgegreenstreet · 02/08/2024 11:37

One of the reasons it's a cheaper area of Cumbria to live in is it's proximity to the motorway but the countryside is lovely and it's handy for both Penrith and Kendal. You'll need a car though.

It is OK, very 'functional' for folk who want a nice enough place and able to commute. You wont be pestered by tourists...unless you go to the services. The road to Kendal is not easy in winter. Like any rural place, it will have its benefits, and you will share the community with a real mix of folk.
I personally think there are nicer places, but rent will be more or properties harder to find.
Kendal is good and has everything you need for shops.
What employment do you need?
