Beverley, Driffield or Market Weighton?

Considering a move from Bristol to Yorkshire. We've narrowed it down to Beverley, Driffield or Market Weighton. Looking for any insight/feedback into life in those places to help us choose.

Few things people seem to like to know on these threads:

  • my partner and I have home based jobs - so no geographical ties
  • We have no family in the UK
  • We're a family of 4 (2 primary school aged kids) - we're pretty active/outdoorsy. Love watersports in particular and would like to get into climbing.
  • we're aware that things like future jobs for the children will likely be more difficult in Yorkshire than Bristol but on balance feel like the 10ish years in between now and the kids being of working age would be better spent in a place where we'd have more disposable income.

The move is largely financially driven, but also things like space (we're in a 2 bed house with one toilet and no outdoor storage ATM) and aire quality. We are managing currently, noone is hungry, we're clothed and can turn the heating on when needed etc. But there is very little 'fun money' for holidays, babysitters, meals out, after school clubs, gym memberships etc. We're basically at work/school and then at home hanging out. Which we like to do, but it would be nice to feel like we had the option to do things of an evening rather than worrying about the impact on finances.

Having researched all three places were confident if we moved we would likely gain a bedroom, a reception room and a garage and still release equity from our home, even after covering moving costs. We could then use this to pay off more of the mortgage, bringing down the monthly outgoings which would mean we could relax quite a bit when it comes to spending money. Be nice to have the kids see an ice cream van and not say "there's no point asking, they won't say yes" :(

So that's about us and the motivations. Be lovely if anyone had anything to say about those three towns which would help us choose!

Market Weighton is a real shithole. Just walk in the high street in the evening, full of chavs, single mums and lots of drugs. Very weird people.
Beverley is much better!

Really? Do you live in Market Weighton? Because I do, and my family are from Beverley and I find Beverley to be full of rude, pretentious snobs. And since when was being a single mum a crime?

ThisPearlFish · 18/05/2025 19:32

I prefer snobs to chavs! But we all have our preferences!

How insulting! MW isn’t perfect but I can honestly say I’ve never seen what you’ve described and I’ve found the people very friendly and not at all weird.

The area surrounding the church in Market Weighton is very pretty, as is the road leading up to the Driffield roundabout.

Despite its charms Beverley is far too overcrowded, the estates these days stretch miles away from the town centre with nothing to be seen but rows upon rows of houses, and the road network is inadequate for so densely built-up an area.

I really like MW but we decided against it because we realised we’d constantly be having to drive to Beverley for shop etc.
Driffield has a really lovely high street and everything we need day to day.

Well chavs have never pushed past me to get into a shop I was trying to exit. Or look me up and down like I’m a piece of shit on their shoe. Or hit my partner with their cane as we were waiting for a bus. Or make racist comments. Or smash into me with their walker. All of the above has happened to me in Beverley.

Having lived in a number of towns and cities in North and East Yorkshire I can say without a shadow of a doubt that you couldn’t pay me to live in Beverley. I have never felt so unwelcome. And like I say, I know it well as I have family there. I’d hate to think how it is for people who try and move there with no ties. And it’s actually not any more expensive than a lot of towns in the area but for some reason people act like they’re on an episode of Made In Chelsea.

Beverley is absolutely lovely and objectively a much better option than MW if you can afford it. MW is also very nice but with much less to offer.

You’re both being ridiculous and using these towns as a way to personally attack and insult each other.

This is about someone who is considering moving hundreds of miles away. It’s not about you and your hurt feelings.

I can actually easily afford to live in either, but chose MW in the end because of how unwelcome I feel every time I’m in Beverley. How is that not relevant to the OP’s question when I am someone who knows both towns very well? And like I said, the actual town of Beverley is very nice, the people less so-which I assume is something a person who has never been there before might actually want to know?

A place is not just about amenities but also about friendliness, kindness and a sense of community.

It’s embarrassing.
I hope OP just skims your spat and doesn’t think it’s reflection of the area.

I genuinely do not understand why you are reacting this way to my comments. The OP asked about people’s experiences of living in three towns. And I have given my opinion on two of the towns I know very well. One that I live in and the other that my family lives in. Why is my opinion less valuable than anyone else’s? Why is my response embarrassing?

Beverley is lovely if your face fits.
I lived there for 18 months and hated it. I was like a pariah at the school gates because DS has SEN.
It's a beautiful town, great amenities but not very friendly.

Thank you! That is exactly the case!

Born in Beverley, family there. Grew up in Pocklington. Family in Driffield and Market Weighton. Boarding school in Malton. Think I have ticked all the boxes! In Cumbria now and miss the Wolds, seeing for miles, sandy beaches and Yorkshire curd tart. Hope it works out for you.

We’ve moved to a little village near Easingwold, just North of York. Great primary and outstanding secondary and it’s just so nice! I must say it’s nice being close to the hills as I do like hills/moors etc. we are only twenty minutes to beautiful York. We can pretty much get anywhere in Yorkshire within an hour; coast, dales, moors. I’d really reccommend it. You can get houses in your budget and I would really recommend it. I feel like I’ve given my kids an idyllic childhood. Feel free to message—but I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the places you gave mentioned. Good luck with your move
