Has anyone moved to St David’s (Pembrokeshire)

from a less remote place and can share their experience?

I’m keen to make the move from a busy city in north England. It’ll be just H, dog and me. We (not the dog) both drive and work from home, although I’ll need to travel to Swansea occasionally.

H is concerned about being so far from ‘everything’.

I’m from the area - its pretty far from swansea, the vast majority of that journey is on very quiet roads, getting from st clears to carmarthen is a nightmare of a morning and you’ve only got motorway for a tiny part of the journey.

it is a beautiful part of the world though, although pricey these days. What about being closer to carmarthen?

Thank you. That’s a very good point about it being quiet roads. Although I’d only need to venture into Swansea around once a fortnight/3 weekly.

Carmarthenshire is beautiful and we did consider it but given I won’t be going to Swansea much, it didn’t seem worth it.

Do you tend to need to leave the St David’s/Haverfordwest area much or do you find everything you need is there?

Don’t underestimate the travel time from Swansea, depending on where you are going and time of day. I’m only 6 miles away and it takes me 45 minutes to cross the city at 4:30pm. Carmarthen is another 40 minutes on top.

May I ask why St Davids in particular? It is one of my most favourite cities on earth but it is remote and quite an extreme move from a busy city. Haverfordwest has most things you'd be likely to "need" but it is effectively a large market town. I suppose it depends on what you feel you'd be missing out on. Also, to echo other posters, the journey to Swansea can seem never ending.

Have you thought about anywhere else in Pembrokeshire, perhaps around Tenby or Saudersfoot?

I personally would recommend staying in St Davids for a week off season and see what you think.

We have visited every year for the past 10 and now do twice a year, winter and summer, for 2-3 weeks a time. The second trip we usually take work with us.

Each trip it gets harder to leave and I’m just counting down the days until we’re back. I feel settled there, like I haven’t experienced anywhere else.

Cupine we moved city to a small coastal place following recognition that we found it harder and harder to leave.
hope that helps- worked for us . Also the thought that if we dnt like it - can always move!

BreezySwan · 02/08/2025 19:41

Did you move?

Testerical · 15/09/2025 21:52

I love this part of the UK.

Interested to know if you made the move, as well.

Am considering Tenby for when I retire at (hopefully) 65, but I’m worried about being a long way away from major conurbations as I get older. And being a long way from/ inaccessible for my kids - although both are likely to be in the West Country.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 15/09/2025 22:19

I’d really think about access to things that you are likely to need as you get older. Health services, public transport, carers etc.

The reality of being rural can be very hard with limited choices.

I hope you managed to move OP. Your plan sounds like absolute bliss.

I make my St. Davids/Solva/Porthgain pilgrimage numerous times a year and its so good for the soul.
