Anywhere in Norfolk not totally flat?!

We’re considering moving to Norfolk from near Ipswich. Mainly because housing is a bit cheaper, and we can afford a rural house, nice garden, village location etc for the same price as our 3 bed semi on a housing estate.

We’re considering most of Norfolk, apart from the North West area, just because of work. We’ve been up a few times, mainly to the beach for day trips.

Is there an area that anyone can recommend that isn’t COMPLETELY flat? I mean, we live in Suffolk, I’m not expecting hills 🤣😅 But somewhere that I can’t see the next house, 10 miles away across one huge flat field? Maybe an area with a little bit of rolling hills, variety of woods and fields etc. Just a nice looking area, with good variety for dog walks and being outside enjoying it all.

We’ve got a 14 month old so somewhere near villages with maybe toddler swim classes, baby groups etc would be great.

Thanks for any suggestions ☺️☺️

The only bit of Norfolk that I know of that's not flat is the bit you don't want to go to! Around Sandringham & Castle Rising, up to Hunstanton.

Oh, typical! 😅

Mousehold hill in Norwich 😂

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 21/09/2023 13:25

There an incline in Downham market. Had to change gear to get up it when cycling.

VeloVixen · 21/09/2023 13:29

It’s really only the Broads which is “fen flat”

would the area around Holt be ok for you, that’s got some slopes.

KimWexlersPonyTail · 21/09/2023 13:32

There's always The Beeston Bump.....

Mangolover123 · 21/09/2023 13:36

Cromer and East and West Runton, there is a cliff.
Kelling Heath

Thisistyresome · 21/09/2023 13:50

I think there is a slight slope somewhere on the way to Great Yarmouth.

I’ve just googled Holt and it looks gorgeous! That area would be fine for us. DP works away during the week at various sites, mainly in London, and work mate lives in Ipswich. So we need a location from which he would go via Ipswich to get to London Monday morning and Friday night (or could, without it being a huge detour).

Yes! It is called the Lincolnshire Wolds ;-)

MegBusset · 25/09/2023 13:55

Holt is lovely but a fair drive to Norwich let alone Ipswich

I’d look at the Waveney valley , Norfolk/Suffolk border - Bungay, Beccles etc

newnameforanewday · 07/10/2023 11:20

We purposely go to Norfolk because it IS flat for holidays. Our 8 and 10 year old love cycling there. We are from hilly Oxfordshire and they struggle cycling here.

As your little one gets older you might learn to love it!

RenoDakota · 07/10/2023 11:43

Try South Norfolk, OP. There is a massive great hill between Stoke Holy Cross and Poringland!
Most of South Norfolk is beautiful, has woods and gently rolling hills and, of course, is way closer to Ipswich for you than somewhere like Holt.

Cringo · 24/11/2023 17:56

Nolfolk is'nt flat in many places it's largely undulating, Noel Coward has a lot to answer for with his silly song, Cambridgeshire and less so Lincolnshire are mostly flater than Norfolk.

Pearldiamond8 · 14/01/2024 17:58

Is Holt expensive though

Sometimesnot · 14/01/2024 18:01

Gas hill in Norwich or one of the south norfolk market towns

greggstomelette · 21/09/2023 13:24

Mousehold hill in Norwich 😂

Exactly what I was going to say! Near the train station to commute too.

JoeLovesGina · 14/01/2024 18:10

Melton Constable.

Holt is expensive.
The Broads are not the flattest part, West Norfolk is.

It's a lovely area but not an easy commute in the mornings. It will take ages.

MyShrivelledGnarlyFinger · 14/01/2024 18:39

Definitely South Norfolk

Pearldiamond8 · 14/01/2024 21:53

What about Melton Constable?

Puffykins · 14/01/2024 22:13

The Ringland Hills? Don't get too excited, they're very small hills, but they're hills nonetheless, and they're in Norfolk...

KnickerlessParsons · 14/01/2024 22:39

We asked directions in Norfolk once. The man said "turn left at the top of the hill". We couldn't find the hill for a while, until we realised the road we were on was about a foot* higher at one end 😁

*I may be exaggerating but the "hill" was barely discernible, particularly to someone who lives in Wales!
