What the hell flew into my bedroom last night?

So it was a hot night and I had the bedroom window open when I was woken around midnight by something big and buzzing bashing around.

I am guessing it's a hornet but the bloody thing is over 3cm long and it took half a can of fly spray and 20 minutes to die.

Below it is a wasp for comparison of size.

Asian hornets have yellow legs. This one looks like a European one. Next time - spray them with CIF - it’ll die much quicker

User19543785 · 11/09/2023 19:47

It probably killed the bee, that's what they do

One of those flew into our living room last night. It interrupted the Wales v Fiji rugby match. We had to pause it and then we had to have internet blackout until we got to the end so that we didn't find out who won.
DH caught the hornet with a fishing net and let it go outside. 🐝

Mine was after I had gone to bed after watching the Wales v Fiji game. So maybe after your DH released it , it then turned up at mine.

I'll never understand why people are needlessly unpleasant. What did you gain from this?

Not as unpleasant as needlessly killing insects though, hey?

OooohAhhhh · 11/09/2023 19:48

Why are you killing them? We need wasps etc. How would you like to be spray canned then die a slow death for 20 mins?
No need to kill them. Just open a window where it's at and it will go.

Or next time don’t kill it at all!!

Don’t see why you had to kill it to be honest.

Because it was midnight, I was half asleep, totally freaking out and had read at some point something about Asian Hornets being able to kill with a single sting.

Maybe she knows my six year old dd who had a little collection of dead bees and wasps in a box!

Would feel the same way about mosquitoes and their need to bite you in order to survive?

That was a reply to someone who asked why the OP had a dead wasp for comparison only the quote didn't show up! Hopefully this one will work!

Interesting idea and I like the way your DD thinks.

But I definitely dont collect dead insects but maybe need to vacuum more.

Because I'd never understand why you'd come on here and be proud of the fact you killed something and it took 20 minutes to die? I'm not saying you wouldn't panic, I'm not saying you wouldn't wonder what you'd killed. Just killing something with fly spray and it taking 20 minutes to die is so horrible, I don't know what you're getting out of it other than social media likes?

I don't get the whole insta thing so it's not where my thought jumped to. It just seemed you wanted to belittle her. I doubt anyone chooses this method of eviction over another, in the middle of the night purely for an insta story. Because it's the first thing that occurred to you then maybe that says more about your shallowness than the OP's.

But kudos for not killing insects with sprays.

No the bee was lying dead already on the window sill - but absolutely not killed by myself.

I'll give you a great reason not to kill hornets - a dying hornet sends out some kind of pheromone signal that calls its friends...*

*this isn't a joke. Although I think it only really applies it dies near their nest

Labtastic · 11/09/2023 19:59

I know they're meant to be fairly docile but given they sound as loud as a microlight flying past your ear, I never hang around to find out how friendly they are

cardiganboo · 11/09/2023 20:01

OhNoForever · 11/09/2023 18:12

It's a European hornet. Why would you kill it? Why not just let it out?

I'd burn my fooking house down if that came in

We sometimes find dead bees and wasps in our house, they probably just get trapped inside and die, I thought it may have killed it because it seems that is a big worry with these hornets, it showed one on the TV eating a bee it had killed

YellowChrysnthemum · 11/09/2023 20:03

To those saying they kill bees - yes, but this is a native one and so their bee killing activities are part of the natural ecosystem/food chain. Did you know that honey bees actually aren't native and are edging out our native bees.

cardiganboo · 11/09/2023 20:04

Wasps and hornets are all dying off now anyway. Murder away.

KnickerlessParsons · 11/09/2023 20:04

If you're in Wiltshire, then could be, and please accept my apologies.

Great - this is the stuff of nightmares that I am now going to targeted tonight in some kind of hornet vengeance attack.

I don't care how hot it is tonight , all windows will be closed and the doors double locked.

We’ve had a few European Hornets in the house the last few days (red on the back) scary buggers!

Judging by some posters on this thread you might have a MN revenge attack

Porridgeislife · 11/09/2023 20:10

I had one fly into my toddlers room two nights ago and I freaked out and killed it. It was absolutely demented and I was terrified it would sting her.

We’ve also had these weird insects that look like a cross between a daddy long legs spider and a mosquito the last few days. No idea what they are!
