Late school registration advice needed

We are thinking of moving just north of Chelmsford into one of the new developments and have fallen in love with a house up there we would like to move forward with. Problem is I have a son who is going into year 1 in September and I would be late in registering him in a new school as cut off was in January. We wouldn't be completing on the house until end of July (timing with when my son ends his final term at the current school) so wouldn't be able to provide proof of address until then. How do I navigate this? I'm worried because of all the development in the area all the decent schools will be oversubscribed. I'm not from the UK (I'm Canadian) so I am still not completely well versed in how this all works. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

There’s not really a cut off like that after reception year. People obviously move all different times through the year and can transfer in at any point, but of course it all does depend on spaces. Probably best to speak to the local authority and find out if any schools are likely to have year 1 places. You might have to get on waiting lists - obviously people move away too so spaces do open up.

When we moved because we took the nearest available option and it was more than a certain number of miles away (2 maybe?) the local authority were obliged to provide transport and my daughter had a funded taxi for a while which was helpful when I had a toddler to get to the local nursery and a new born baby too.

How far away from the new place do you live? If there’s a space now where you want it you could apply now and commute. I think even if you currently live miles away if there is a space and no one closer on a waiting list above you then you would get offered it.

It doesn't work like that for Year 1. Each child in Reception in each school will automatically get a Year 1 place, and the class numbers will be the same size as the Reception classes. If they were full for Reception then there will be no Year 1 places unless someone moves away or a decision has been made this year to create an extra class. Unless they increased capacity last year in anticipation of the new development and did not fill a school ( in other words, it was undersubscribed) then you are in a "one in, one out" situation unfortunately. But in the upside there is no cutoff for applying, you can apply any time.

Thanks everyone! I've contacted the local authority and looks like I have to wait until June to apply as mid year admission. Fingers crossed!
