Help me find nice places near Carmarthen, Wales

Lostinwales77 · 12/04/2023 19:08

For work reasons, I need to move to Carmarthenshire. My actual job will be in Carmarthen.

I found a great house on Rightmove in St Clears and went to look round it this week. But I was shocked at how shabby St Clears is! Every other house looks derelict. I also noticed how many houses just look quite run down.

Please could anyone suggest other villages or market towns to look at near Carmarthen, that don't look so run down?!

Thank you!

Ps. Budget is £300k

Llandeilo

AccidentallyFabulous · 12/04/2023 19:10

Llandeilo is meant to be nice.

If you want to be fairly rural it will be a real advantage to be Welsh speaking.

Cherry321 · 12/04/2023 19:11

Laugharne or Llansteffan are nice?

NancyJoan · 12/04/2023 19:22

Narberth is lovely. Might be too far to drive, depends on if you can WFH some days.

Lostinwales77 · 12/04/2023 20:03

Thank you for these suggestions so far, some brilliant ideas! I love the villages/towns with a castle too

What is Carmarthen itself like to live in?

Carmarthen has plenty of nice areas! Llandeilo/nantaredig is nice, as is narbeth and that direction (although a ballache for traffic in the summer, to come down to carmarthen!!)

everywhere has shabby places in parts!

mumonthehill · 12/04/2023 20:09

Loads of people commute in to Carmarthen from quite far away. So Cardigan, Newcastle emlyn, narberth, towards Haverfordwest. I would say st clears not great nor Carmarthen. Narberth and Llandelio really good.

GCWorkNightmare · 12/04/2023 20:12

Nantgaredig is lovely.

roseopose · 12/04/2023 20:16

Kidwelly? Or surrounding villages.

Jellykat · 12/04/2023 20:16

Cardigan, Cilgerran, Lampeter, Newcastle Emlyn all about 45 mins drive.. Narbeth is great, but hellish in the Summer!

clarepetal · 12/04/2023 20:21

Is Tenby not too far?

Tiredmum100 · 12/04/2023 20:31

I live 20 mins from Carmarthen. Nice area, good links to M4. I will message you.

Cherry321 · 12/04/2023 20:48

Swansea isn’t too far either. Probably around 30 mins.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 12/04/2023 21:04

St Clears is lovely. I have a soft spot for Llanelli, too. Narberth is gorgeous!

pinedpiper · 12/04/2023 21:05

Carmarthen itself if nice enough and functional.

If you want more rural Id go further down toward the m4. Porthyd, drefach, crosshands, ammanford. Easier access to Swansea and cardifff and the rest of the world.

I agree with Llandeilo, Kidwelly, Laugharne, Llansteffan areas. There are lots of lovely village communities, and the countryside is beautiful.

The buses are mainly shit. So look at the public transport. Very rural villages dont always have buses, and a 20 min journey can take almost an hour on the bus.

Drefach, Porthyrhyd and Crosshands areas have only Welsh medium primary schools. The whole of the Gwendraeth Valley are Welsh medium.

You need to think about this, and how you would manage to get the kids to English medium school if you needed to. It depends on the age of the children, and if they have any additional learning needs and are jn mainstream.

Llanelli you get a lot of house for your money, but it is very deprived and I wouldn't want to live there. Town centre is very sad.

Lostinwales77 · 13/04/2023 08:16

Thanks so much everyone! Woke brilliant suggestions

Tenby and Narberth are just about do-able I think as I'll be able to work from home.

Kids will be starting sixth form in September.

@PopethYnIawn thanks so much, you're a star.
So according to that, and what you know. the deprived areas are pretty focused around a couple of areas?

@Tiredmum100
Thanks so much, that'd be really helpful. I haven't had a pM yet, so just checking it hasn't got lost in cyberspace!

If kids starting 6th form then look at Pembrokeshire college as they do A levels and vocational courses. It is in Haverfordwest.

betterlucknexttimefingerscrossed · 13/04/2023 12:00

Llandeilo has a large sixth form both English and Welsh medium.

I'm unable to log in to pm at the moment. Home tomorrow so will message then. I was going to ask if you have children. Personally I think places like llandeilo etc might be a bit boring if you have teenage children.

Ok, bit outing but I live in one of the surrounding villages / areas out side llanelli. Agree the town centre is sad, but I do have a lot of house for my money. There are nice areas with good links to the motorway. My DC go to a English stream school. Areas to consider would be Bryn, bynea, llangennech, swiss valley.

HumptyNumpty76 · 13/04/2023 13:18

Llandeilo is quite expensive. Llandybie, Milo (also a bit pricey) are nice. Gorslas. All close to the M4.
